I want one of these, for lots of things. With the midi capabilities of the Feline custom I'm getting you could have all kinds of sound samples recorded by this Tascam and really get out there, dogs barking, seagulls squawking, trains, rivers, traffic.....oh dear...... the croation lesbian neighbours having an orgasm with a kangol breaker plugged into my electric.....no...no..not that... :lol: ....:roll:
Hm, what you describe is field recording. I haven't tested the DR-1 outside and while moving. I heard that the handling noises are a problem, so is wind. Not sure if the DR-1 is the best choice for that particular application. I think it's the best price/value for loud band stuff inside and on a stand.
What about some kind of foam muffler over the microphone like those giant things news crews have?
Do you know of any units that are good for field recording?
Well I think state of the art is the Sony PCM-D50. I guess it might even be worth the additional $$ (around 580 EUR). There is a nice furry mic protection available but that costs pretty extra.
Don't get me wrong, the DR-1 is not bad, but I think you might be better off with the Edirol or the Olympus for those applications. But not sure, you should try some (like I did) before buying. Let those shops do sth for their money.
The Sony is very expensive but does sound like an amazing piece of technology.
The Olympus LS-10 sounds good value and you get a built in wind proof jacket.
Thanks for sharing this purchase with us all Hunter, I was totally unaware of these things! They sound like a lot of fun to use. This is a good thing for bootleggers, bands, jounos, podcasters, the list goes on and on. 8)
Welcome. Be careful with the Olympus, it does not cope well with high volumes, at least it didn't get a clean take of a drumset played with lots of punch.
Ok thanks for the tip. :D Would you think your Tascam would cope well outdoors with a wind jacket on? It does seem like great value for money.
I contacted Tascam about the AK1 accessory kit for the DR1....
"The accessory kit for the DR-1 is not available yet, it will have a wind shield, tripod and mic stand adaptor. The price is yet unconfirmed but will probably be between 20 – 30 pounds."
Pity it does not have an existing tripod/mike stand mount.

I'm going to hold out for Tascam's kit. Any how a tripod mount should be a 1/4 Whitworth thread and a windsock could be fashioned from a thick sock, thus saving money and inviting other contributors with their ideas to make the pyramid bigger!
