BKP's in V's?
« on: March 10, 2008, 11:33:57 PM »
Hello.

The questions in the title really, what BKPs do you have in your Vs?

I'm looking for ideas for pickups for my Faded Flying V. I've spoken to Tim about this already, so I have a good idea what will work, but just wondered what you guys were using in yours :)

i had a miracle man in my 82 rocket roll II and it sounded really good it just seemed to lack bass in that guitar

could have been because it was basswood.

I have a Black Dog bridge and Stormy Monday neck in my white Edwards V, but it's not the greatest combo (in that particular guitar).

I'd say Riff Raff bridge and SM or Mule neck would be better.  Or go high-output with a set of Painkillers?
BKPs I've Got:  RR, BKP-91, ITs, VHII, CS set, Emeralds
BKPs I Had:  RY+Abraxas, Crawlers, BD+SM

I've got a ceramic Warpig and Holy Diver in mine, but it's not your typical Gibson V with a mahogany body/neck and rosewood board.
I use Warpigs, Nailbombs, Holy Divers, BlackDogs and VHIIs.

epi '58 V A4 Mule / A2 Stormy Monday. Individually the pickups work excellently, but they don't work the best as a team

epi goth original dirty fingers. very cool pickups, but lack a bit of subtlety. bass response a bit too much for me - but its a dark guitar

gordon smith some overwound humbucker sized P90s. this guitar has really cool sounding mids! i wish that they weren't overwound, its a simdgeon too dark.

greco A5 / A4 mules. What a set this is!! Highy recommendable.

gibson Riff Raff set. Nails 'strangers in the night' tone. Neck is cold when clean though - but its got the bite for schenker soloing. I think Riff Raff / Stormy Monday would be a fine combo

feline Cold Sweat set. Neck pickup is marvellous. At first i liked the bridge - if you use it right it nails 'defenders of the faith' sort of tones. bridge is very subtle clean - like it alot. its a great vintage hot vibe. bass response is a bit flabby though on the bridge - so...

Miracle Man / Cold Sweat. The Miracle Man bridge tightens the bass response marvellously. Sounds rather modern though. Might try a Rebel Yell set in this Feline one day.

hamer DiMarzio Super Distortion / PAF. I got vintage pickups from the 70s and potted them myself. Even if they are proper vintage ones, they aren't in the same league as these other pickups. Rather nasally mids, similar to first Iron Maiden album.

If you want a vintage set, I'd go for A5/A4 mules or Riff Raff/Stormy Monday. As you can see, I've not much experience with the higher gain models, but miracle man will certinally be fine.

Miracle Man in my Gibson '67 reissue
Warpig in my Gibson Gothic

For some reason I didn't bother to replace the neck pickups in either of my Vs (maybe it's because I hardly use it).  One day I'll get a couple of Cold Sweat necks for them...

Also, they're not "proper" Flying-Vs but:
Painkiller/Cold Sweat in my Jackson KV2
Holy Diver set in my Jackson RR1T (probably my favourite guitar)
BKPs: HD, MM, NB, PK, CS, Ab (b&n); Am (b only); VHII, Tril (n only); IT, Slow, Sult (m&n)

Cheers for your replies guys.

Tbh, I don't really know what sound I want from this V. I pretty much have the vintage side covered with the Mules in a LP, Black Dog/Riff Raff in my Gordon Smith and Crawler/IT/IT in my USA Strat. As well as the 'higher gain' side with the Cold Sweat/Trilogy in my Charvel and (maybe) Nailbombs or Holy Divers in my Ibanez S470.

Before I spoke to Tim, I was thinking of a Mississippi Queen neck, but wasn't sure on the bridge pickup. I spoke to Tim and he said that a MQ neck should work fine, aswell as suggesting something like a Mule or a Riff Raff as sometimes higher output pickups can sound dark in Vs.

Thanks for the info guys.

Seems like alot of you have high output pickups in yours, do any of you find them to sound dark with higher output pickups in?

What did you not like about the MM to make you want to try something else?

Nothing it sounded great, just decided to turn my tone down a notch and there wasnt the need for all that gain anymore.

at first i really enjoyed the cold sweats in the feline... as time goes on i'm thinking more and more that they're far too dark.

as i commented before - if found the miracle man to be fine :)
