It doesn't have to be. I use an adapter from my digitech whammy to power my boss pedals with no problems. Just make sure the polarity is the same and that the adapter as at least the same regulated current as the pedal as hamfist stated.

mA = milliamps

It should say on the adapter and the pedal. Some pedals don't have them though and if they don't you'd have to look it up.

Here's a Boss adapter for reference.

The part where it lists the output is what you need to look for. Most pedals are 9V and after that it'll list the current value usually in mA. Also the diagram near the bottom with the little + and - symbols shows the polarity. It has to be the same as the pedal it's going into.

Heres all the info on my adapter -

PRI: 230v~50Hz 10.8W
SEC: 9V--- 500mA 4.5VA

Is this ok?

It depends. What are the specs of the pedal you're going to use it for? If the pedal is rated for less than 500mA and 9V you're good to go. Also make sure the polarity diagram matches up on both.

One more thing man!!

If you order from Visual Sound they have the One Spot that can power all your pedals. They have special adapters that come with it, you can power nearly anything. You can check it out as well on the website.

Visual Sound pedals are all build very well and the new V2 series has a noise gate on nearly every pedal.
