Neck clean sound shootout (HD, VHII, CS, NB, MM, PK)
« on: March 14, 2008, 04:54:51 PM »
Yet again my (lack of) recording skill fails to capture the huge differences in sounds between BKP models  but having gone to the effort, I'm going to post anyway...

There have been a few posts asking about neck models & it occurred to me that I own 6 of them.  So I recorded these at the weekend, one after the other without changing any settings.

It's a fairly simple chord progression that I played twice, switching on some chorus for the second one each time.  Yes, there are mistakes - for some reason I got a major attack of butter fingers while trying to record with the Nailbomb & lost patience after take 4  :) (+ the click track was starting to bore into my head like a chinese water torture )

Guitars:
Jackson RR1T (Holy Diver)
PRS Singlecut (VHII)
Jackson KV2 (Cold Sweat)
Gibson Les Paul (Nailbomb)
Gibson Les Paul (Miracle Man)
Charvel model 5 (Painkiller)

Amp: Engl Savage 120 (channel 1 of course), Mesa Recto 2x12" cab (vintage 30s)
FX: MXR M134 Chorus (second time only)
Mic/Recording: Shure SM57, Presonus Bluetube DP, Fostex MR16HD

Enjoy :)
BKPs: HD, MM, NB, PK, CS, Ab (b&n); Am (b only); VHII, Tril (n only); IT, Slow, Sult (m&n)

Nice dude.  Out of the clips I preferred the VH, NB, and HD the most in that order.  Do them under gain now!  8)

Quite surprisingly I prefered the HD out of the bunch. There just seemed to be more harmonics. Thanks for the clips, it's quite helpful. Now do some leads! :P

Yep, I've promised a few people on PMs that I'll do some neck leads.  If I get a chance in the next week or so I'll fire up the recorder & have a go.

FWIW Holy Diver is by far my favourite for clean sounds.  As I said in my post, my recordings have "evened out" the differences (especially in power), but I think that I've caught the brightness & clarity of the HD fairly well.

VH is my fav by far. very warm and more depth and mids. great sounding neck pup.

I like the HD too its very very clear, but much thinner almost bridge like with lots more treble.
