Shielding Problems on a Bass
« on: March 23, 2008, 03:24:12 PM »
Ok, so I'm fiishing off building a Stingray shape, 5-String bass with 2 BKP Jazz Bass pups. It has no scratch plate with the pups being front routed and electronics being rear-rourted, nice and simple like, no volume controls, just a a pup selector. Right, my problems...

I'm finishing off shielfing at the moment, using some self adhesive copper tape. My method was to copper tpe up all 3 cavities, making sure I left the pup screw holes clear so they weren't grounded. I then connected up each cavity with a wire, and connected the bridge too. So, I should have a nicely shielded bass. I checked each cavity to make sure all the copper tape joined up with a circuit tester, and a current can run from one cavity to the next.

Then I installed the first pickup... I connected the ground directed to the shielding beneath the pickup, and ran the hot to the tip connector of my jack input. I thought it should all be fine, I haven't made a cover for my electics cavity yet, so that will go on soon. The problem being that although all the shielding and grounds are connected up, theres loads of hum, and the hum increases when I touch the shielding of the bridge. I'm not sure whats going on, I checked to make sure there was no interference from lights or my soldering iron, but still there was this hum and still it increased when I touched it.

Any ideas?
Yours,
