Classic Thrash Sound?
« on: March 27, 2008, 11:37:01 PM »
Hey guys,

I have been hearing good things about these pickups on the metal circuit so i thought id come check em out and they are sounding awesome!! I am currently playing a Jackson KVx10 -alder body.

In my band i am gonna be playing alot of old skool (megadeth) soundin thrash riffs + maiden style rhythms. I think quite alot of open E ... standard tuning

need some good aggression and mids aswell.

What would you reccomend for pickups?
I am literally lost as to what to buy so any help would be great

Thanks
Josh

Miracle man

the only thing you may not like is the mids arent really in your face but they are there, and its nothing that turning them up on the amp doesnt fix

I play exactly the same kind of stuff as you and it is ideal for it.

Also heres a cover of trust i started a while back but never finished.

all guitars on it were done using my miracle man bridge in my agile les paul copy.

holy diver or nailbomb
painkiller if you want something brighter and more aggressive
i wouldn't put a miracle man in an alder jackson (i had a jackson, kelly k10 pro, a kramer imperial and a washburn dime 333)
Riff Raff, Mules, Black Dog, VHII's, Cold Sweat

well for the most part i am sure, looking at the riffs the band is using at the minute, there is gonna be alot of fast triplets and chuggin E string and chord progressions.

As i said the more agressive the chugging can sound the better. I dont really care about its capability to solo, as atm i am focusing on dave mustaine/john shaffer rhythm work.

Nice cover on trust!!
Is thier anyone on these boards who has done anything like symphony of destruction or peace sells or master of puppets with any of these pickups? If i could hear what we are covering then i can make an assumption to how they will sound with our own stuff

Holy Diver would be my first choice - sounds fantastic in alder Jacksons.  I've recorded a few clips with my HD-equipped RR1T in the Player's forum.  This  is probably my favourite.  Perhaps my shootout clip might be useful too.

I also have a Painkiller in my KV2 - very tight & aggressive, tons of mids & power, but perhaps a little bright for some tastes.  I recorded some metal riffs here & here with it.

Hope this helps...
BKPs: HD, MM, NB, PK, CS, Ab (b&n); Am (b only); VHII, Tril (n only); IT, Slow, Sult (m&n)

Painkiller for megadeth, without a doubt. Will do a great maiden too.

holy diver will be a lot more versatile and full
less aggressive, but definitely tight enough and closer to the pickups used by megadeth and iron maiden than the painkiller
i'd recommend the pk for a big mahogany guitar, like a gibson flying v or les paul
Riff Raff, Mules, Black Dog, VHII's, Cold Sweat

Well, I havent played a holy diver, but from what I've heard its darkness and smoothness compared to the PK make it a poorer choice for deth and maidens mid-crunch sounds.

Its more than just magnets and DC resistance: its voicing. The voicing of the PK is very good for megadeth indeed. A bit bassy and powerfull for maiden, but a little roll back of the appropriate dials and its there.

believe me, the holy diver is tight, even through mahogany
not raspy, but tight
and alder will help with it
mustaine and friedman used the JB for years, and the holy diver is tighter and a bit more powerful than it
unless he's playing a "messup" boogie, there's no need for going ceramic

I didnt mention tightness  :?

The JBs got a mid-spike that the PK and Nailbomb get you nearest (but better).

Old school thrash? Miracle Man! Well it is for me anyway. It likes Scott Ian chugs a lot and with a good amp and a BBE Sonic Maximiser you' can nail his tone and tightness no problem.
