Just got back from Boston with my new geetar:

ESP Horizon Standard 2008.

3 piece maple neck thru
ebony fingerboard
Mahogany wings
Quilted Maple top
Gotoh Magnum lock tuners
Seymour Jb/59
Volume has a push/push for coil tapping,
Gotoh Tuneomatic - Atleast I think its Gotoh, haven't actually taken it off to see yet.

Either way - Plays amazingly, superb action, amazing frets, just everything I could ask for. Sounds massive, and looks awesome.

Here's some shots:

And a few more shots on my photobucket:

I know it doesn't compete with Nolly's black machine - But its lovely nonetheless.
My last FM.
ESP Horizon NTII.
ESP Viper Camo.
ENGL Screamer.

Dude, that is a lovely guitar, no doubt about it! I gassed hard for one of those in that exact colour for a fair while. In fact, I'd probably have bought one if it wasn't for my unorthodox taste in control layout!

Congrats man!

EDIT: How are those the self-locking Gotoh's? Doug's got a set on order for my B2 (apparently noone in the UK stocks the gunmetal ones), and I'm really intruigued to know how they work.

Its a quite cool mechanism, no screwing or anything, it locks as you wind it!

I haven't had a proper chance to test them out yet, and I normally use Sperzels, but this seems to be a perfectly well locked, and they're solid enough for you to not worry about knocking it out of tune etc.

So far I give them top marks.

Awesome, man :D Horizons are one of my very favourite guitars. One day, when I'm less desperately poor (and when I have enough strats), I'll buy one :D
BKPs (soon): CS, TS.
Ex-BKPs: Abrax, NB, SM, PK, Mule, WP.

Ah cool, sounds good. But does that mean the mechanism unlocks if you detune the string?

Its related to the string tension - So I guess at lower tunings the lock will be weaker - But I had it in drop C and it seemed pretty secure - So maybe it only deactivates at very low tension.

Not usually, the part of the peg that you insert the string into screws onto the main shaft (which on some models is height adjustable * ) and as you turn the peg  button, with a string in of course, they naturally close together locking the string. To remove the string you need to loosen it and more often than not use a coin to unlock the screwed on top part.

* The height adjustable part is very fiddly, if you screw it down too low it can seize up and you can't raise the height anymore, this happened to me but the missus made a quick phone call to Gotoh's vice president and he said he'd fix it for free. That's good customer service :)

So what happened to the camo viper, then? You still loving that? How do the guitars compare (clearly they're quite different in style...)?

Oh, and this thread is worthless* without (sound) clips! :)

How do they compare?

Its mostly in sound really. I hate labelling guitars as rhythm or lead - But the maple in the Horizon definitely comes through and it has a searing tone, while that of the viper is very thick and middy. Both guitars play superbly, and feel rather similar - The neck of the Horizon is thicker than that of the Viper, but still very comfortable - While the other major difference is the scale length.

Just picked the two up and the Viper seems heavier - But will need to double check that - Neither of them have any balance issues.

The pickups are ofcourse different - I am most likely going to get some BKPs for the Horizon, and shove the Seymours into my Ibanez.

I'm thinking of a Nailbomb/Cold Sweat or Holy Diver/Cold Sweat combo.

The JB is actually a very nice pickup - Great pinches from it, and good harmonic response.

Nice buy. Did you have any problems bringing it back in from the States - import tax or anything like that?
