I had mixed feelings about the Swedish film, I thought it caught the atmosphere of the book perfectly, and I was surprised at how uncompromising it was in showing the sexual sadism stuff, but I felt it glossed over too much of the story. It was like they'd taken a detective story with Blomqvist as the viewpoint character and turned it into an action-suspense thriller with Salander as the viewpoint character. The plot, which in the book leads you inevitably to it's conclusions and explains them in depth, is hamfistedly resolved in 10 minutes, which I'm sure if you haven't read the book must be really confusing.
For me the detective story, the hacking elements and the conspiracy unravelling were what made the story good in the first place, were glossed over for the sake of momentum. I'd say that the film is most definitely The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, and NOT Men Who Hate Women.

yeah it was a bit quick at times. that happens with most film adaptations of novels, though.

isn't there a longer version of the film available? i haven't seen it, though.
True, but they made choices about how much time they devoted to what that choked off the main story, while at the same time having long silent shots of Swedish exteriors. They edited out too much important stuff while dragging out stuff that wasn't crucial to the central plot.

I, on the other hand, waited for the extended versions because I knew they'd be coming eventually.

I may still buy the theatrical version of part 1 because it was released as a "proper" film, but I think I can probably do without the truncated versions of parts 2 and 3.
The problem with playing that game is I'm still waiting for the unabridged (single film) director's cut of Kill Bill :(

maybe. My big problem is i read the books so far before I saw the films that i can hardly remember what they left out in teh films

also I like the scenery. Maybe not to teh extent of missing out plot because of it, but i always like to see the scenery.

I don't think that's ever coming!  (Not that I'm terribly keen to see it anyway)

Tarantino doesn't seem that interested in revisiting his old films, hence the Blu-rays featuring very little (in the way of extras) that wasn't on the DVDs.

Although they did release the integrated version of Grindhouse....

Betty Boop: Minnie The Moocher

This is really terrific , worth 8 mins of anybody's time.

Starring Cab Calloway (of Blues Brothers fame) as a dancing ghost walrus.
It wasn't a mistake, it was chromaticism, I swear.

Just watched Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story. Surprisingly funny, stupid but funny. This scene is great

I'm about 3/4 of the way through Sons of Anarchy season 4, really good so far. Much darker than the other ones!

In an attempt to save a bit more money we've just cancelled our Sky TV contract. We're now working our way through our entire DVD/BluRay collection. Currently on Season 1 of 24.

Perhaps I will get Jane to watch The Wrestler and Fight Club (and a few other films she always refuses to watch)

EDIT - Not those types of films Afghan.

I think I hate being indecisive.

I haven't watched a film for ages, never seem to have time nowadays.  :|

I've just sent back my current batch of Lovefilm rentals, unwatched - I've had them so long, maybe receiving something new will get me interested again.

I just watched Fast Times at Ridgemont High on Netflix. I'd never seen it before and was really surprised at how good it was (and how heavily it's referenced in other films).

I'm still laughing by that last comment  :D

I just watched "The number 23" and found it quite likable. Not the best of movies but defenitely watchable even though it's quite hard to take Jim Carrey serious. What I mean is, the guy has made so many comedies and to me his face and body expressions are so deeply rooted in the comedy genre that it can be hard to see past his goofyness. The film has some noir-like scenes that hits the atmosphere of the Max Payne computer games way better than the Max Payne movie.

I love that movie! It helps if you've seen Walk The Line first to fully appreciate it though.

Just been to see The Woman In Black, it was awesome! Not usually a fan of horror films as I find them a bit boring but this one was great. There were a few "cheap scares" with bits to make you jump but I found the whole atmosphere was really well done. It looks nice as well, really well shot :) Didn't even mind Daniel Radcliffe, probably because he doesn't really say much in it so you don't notice his wooden acting

I saw the play in the West End a couple of years ago, and it was brilliant.  Would definitely like to see the film.
