I really quite liked Oblivion. Dangerously close to being a proper sci-fi there. Though it did have exciting bits and explosions to stop modern audiences falling asleep.

Mixed feelings on Oblivion. The set was spectacular but it really didn't provoke as much thought as it could have. Nice to see big budgets being spent on nearly proper scifi as you put it. You seen Moon? Now THAT is a spectacular scifi from the last few years, low budget too.

I spent the bank holiday weekend at Frightfest, 22 films in 5 days.  It could've been 26, but I'm too old to cope with the late night screenings (and too chicken to endure the real-life horrors of the night buses which are the only way home at that time of night)
BKPs I've Got:  RR, BKP-91, ITs, VHII, CS set, Emeralds
BKPs I Had:  RY+Abraxas, Crawlers, BD+SM

That's a bit of a marathon Philly! Not sure I could do such an endurance event (although I'm off to see a triple bill of 'Sean of the Dead', 'Hot Fuzz' and 'The Worlds End' in the next few months).

As well as catching up with Breaking Bad and Prison Break (which is farcical but just about watchable) I have also been back to watching documentaries. The most recent ones being;

The Last Gladiators - centres on Chris 'Knuckles' Nilan and the role of the enforcer in ice hockey (essentially someone who is employed to fight). Not sure why I watched it as I'm not into Ice Hockey. That being said it is actually pretty decent and made me want to find out more about him. His story is the stereo typical one of somebody who lived for the sport and when he quit was totally lost without it.

Birdmen - The Original Dream of Human Flight - this was about people that enjoy jumping out of planes, off of cliffs and wearing 'wing suits'. Again a subject that isn't really close to my heart and something that I'm pretty sure I'll never do. Some of the wingsuit proximity jump footage is pretty breath taking and whilst I have some admiration for people that do it I can't help but feel they will all have a relatively short life. One of the people in the documentary died a week after being filmed for it (no spoilers there, he's only in it for a few minutes)

Jason Becker - Not Dead Yet - of the 3 documentaries watched this week this was the one that I enjoyed the most, not just because it was about guitar/music stuff (I'd never really heard or seen him play before watching this). The main enjoyment (not sure enjoyment is the most appropriate word to use here) in this one was how he has dealt with such a terrible and debilitating disease and how his family and friends have supported him throughout. Quite an emotional watch really, I had a friend die from MND a couple of years ago and it reminded me of some of the feelings I had when that was happening. The scenes around the time of him getting the gig with Dave Lee Roth but not being able to tour were pretty depressing. Highly recommended.

I think I hate being indecisive.

Saw The Great Gatsby the other night.

Pretty cool film, great directing and visuals. Not a really deep film, but enjoyable.

Almost finished watching the series The Wire, a police drama that feels real. Not souped up for suspension like all other hollywood based TV series. I can highly recommend it

Yup, Moon and District 9 have been the best Sci-Fi's in years.

I think many on here have seen The Wire. An absolute modern classic. I've watched the whole lot twice and am due for my third run through in the next few months.

The great thing about it is that as it is so detailed and there are lots of arcs to the story you are likely pick up new stuff and spot little nuances that you hadn't seen on the previous viewing.

Until Breaking Bad came about I rated The Wire as the best TV series I had ever seen.

I would like to see The Wire, but you know me, I'd never get round to watching all those episodes.

I believe it was created by David Simon?  Back in the days when I did watch more TV he wrote probably my all-time favourite TV series (and one of the very few I have on DVD) Homicide: Life on the Street.

I think you'll like The Shield. It's a police show about semi dirty cops.

It's just not that they are evil, it's more about the corruption that would be difficult to say no to yourself if you were put in the same situation.
I rate The Shield as the best show I've seen, The Wire is 2nd on that list.

It's strange, I never liked Breaking Bad. I have tried watching two seasons, I just never liked it.

Aside from working my way through Breaking Bad as I mentioned above I've just finished watching The Americans - a Cold War KGB/FBI Spy series and I've started watching The Returned that was on TV a few months back.

I also bought a boxset of the 5 original Planet Of The Apes films for a Tenner a while back and I've just started watching those. I've only seen the 1st 2 films so far and I'm quite enjoying them upto yet.

Forgot about The Americans! That was a great show. I was very glad to see it renewed for a second season.

Never watched the wire. The guardian just WILL NOT SHUT UP ABOUT IT which put me off.

Was kinda wondering whether to try the americans or not but didn't get round to it in the end.

This was a useful post.

Just watched the latest episode of Breaking Bad (confessions). Classic stuff. Probably one of the best episodes of any series I have ever watched. I won't say any more as I don't want to spoil it for others who haven't watched it yet.

I'll be sad when it all finishes.

+1 to all of that, this half of series 5 is getting awesome!

Really? I thought it was bloody awful. Got about an hour in and realised I hadn't liked anything about it so far  the best part about it was when the big thing exploded and my mate timed a ripper of a fart perfectly.

I was doing a search for something unrelated and came across this quote from 19 September 2008......

I'm also currently working my way through the wire which is another one where the writers have apparently been allowed to decide when it should end. damn good TV

Yeah I keep meaning to check that out.  I believe it was created by David Simon?  The man behind my favourite TV show of all time, Homicide: Life on the Street.

C'mon Philly, 5 years on and you still haven't given it a go!

It's more worrying that I managed to write almost exactly the same thing five years later.  Talk about "set in your ways"....  :?
