The Girl with the dragon tattoo - as good as the original in a different way. The scenes that are suppose to be shocking are, Daniel Craig plays Mickel Blomkivsit (?) perfectly for me & Rooney Mara is eerily good as Lisbeth Salander. It is an american remake but does enough for me to make it a good version of the book

I thought it was very well done, the casting was good but I found it a bit "cold" compared with the Swedish version.  Still haven't read the books (they are the printed equivalent of the Warmoth parts under my bed) so I don't know how the films compare.

I also saw:

Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol - Complete and utter nonsense, but not in an annoyng way.  Passed the time pleasantly enough.

haven't seen the english-language remake yet but i'm not holding out much hope, considering how terrible the branagh wallanders and american killing were. obviously that doesn't mean this will be bad (probably made by entirely different people), but i figure i might as well think like this so i'm not disappointed.

Well it's directed by David Fincher, so it was highly unlikely to be a total stinker (no, I haven't seen The Curious Case of Benjamin Button....)

I'm looking forward to seeing The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. Just finished reading the book and I'm halfway through the second. Really good reads. I'm going to try to watch the original before the remake just to see how they all compare.

Captain America, The First Avenger - The first 30-40 mins are OK but this is a poor effort... avoid unless you're a fan of comic book film.

Super 8 - I was looking forward to seeing this but was seriously disappointed. It's like the kids from The Goonies replaced the main characters in Cloverfield. Very high production values can't cover all the negatives, the last act is just terrible. It got good reviews but this film is average.

Over the holiday I watch the boxset of Six Feet Under. I'm not sure why I missed it when first shown but what a treat is was. I can't praise this series highly enough, it's right up there with the best TV of-all-time. The final episode is a master piece.

In a way I'm kinda sad that I saw the original movie then went to watch this as they are both very good, but because they are similar it does make it hard to not compare and contrast the 2, which is a shame as both Rooney Mara & Naomi Rapace do an excellent job of bringing Lisbeth to life

Oh & I'm on a big Community kick at the moment & am half way through season 2, some of the best sitcom comedy to come out of america in a while!

I had mixed feelings about the Swedish film, I thought it caught the atmosphere of the book perfectly, and I was surprised at how uncompromising it was in showing the sexual sadism stuff, but I felt it glossed over too much of the story. It was like they'd taken a detective story with Blomqvist as the viewpoint character and turned it into an action-suspense thriller with Salander as the viewpoint character. The plot, which in the book leads you inevitably to it's conclusions and explains them in depth, is hamfistedly resolved in 10 minutes, which I'm sure if you haven't read the book must be really confusing.
For me the detective story, the hacking elements and the conspiracy unravelling were what made the story good in the first place, were glossed over for the sake of momentum. I'd say that the film is most definitely The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, and NOT Men Who Hate Women.

I watched that at the Imax. Fortunately, I managed to park my brain just outside the cinema. I enjoyed it, surprising as hated all the others in the franchise, but Simon Pegg's more prominent role vastly improved the film.

i really liked it - which may be because my wife spent months going on a bout it beforehand

so we were queueing up on opening night - surrounded by nothing but chavs!

i think the marketing was slightly off on that one  - for me it was quite reminiscent of the early Spielberg films i loved as a kid

on a seperate note, just seen the trailer for warhorse.   Never has a trailer put me off so much, after the first 10 seconds i expected it to be a joke advert

yeah it was a bit quick at times. that happens with most film adaptations of novels, though.

isn't there a longer version of the film available? i haven't seen it, though.

Yeah, you can get the extended Swedish TV versions of all three films now.

I think the first film is only about half an hour longer than the cinema version, but apparently it's edited quite differently.

I, on the other hand, waited for the extended versions because I knew they'd be coming eventually.

I may still buy the theatrical version of part 1 because it was released as a "proper" film, but I think I can probably do without the truncated versions of parts 2 and 3.
