so if I have 4 12inch speakers, each 8 ohms, and 2 15inch speakers, each 8 ohms, and 2 8inch speakers, each 8 ohms, does that mean my total ohmage is 64 or 11.75?

Most heads, you can select the ohmage, ie, 4, 8 or 16 ohm.

It's the cab you usually have to worry about!

My cab is 8 ohm, therefore i have an 8 ohm hotplate

It doesn't matter whether it's a 2x12 or 4x12! It's only starts to get complicated when you connect 2 cabs instead of one, regardless of how many speakers in them

So, if your cab is 8 ohm, set your head also to 8 ohm and buy an 8 ohm hotplate :D

Simple!

My guess is that it's actually a combo, and everything is wired up "inside", hence the confusion.

Roo, it all depends how you wire them up.
I would recommend having both cabs wired up series/parallel for 8 ohm impedance for each cab. Two 8 ohm cab's in parallel make 4 ohms. You'll then have to run your amp out of the 4 ohm output (hope it has one !). if you're using an 8 ohm hotplate, that will be fine to keep as it is, but the amp needs to go to 4 ohms output.

Alternatively you can wire each cab up totally in series for a 32ohm load per cab. Two 32ohm cabs in parallel make a 16 ohm load. You would need a 16 ohm hotplate for that one though.

It all depends what output options your amp has, I suppose.

Haha okay i understand now! Im using an 16 Ohm cab (and yes, the output i use from the head is 16 Ohms) and so i think im going to get it soon then! Sorry for the confusion!

the whole idea of the hotplate was not to give master volume amps the ability to be cranked then attenuated back down to a bee whispering so you can play without you neighbour calling the police.

It was to knock say 8db or 12db off the live sound of a non-master volume style amp so they're more acceptable to be used public..

atleast thats my opinion.

Exactly, or tho you can use them to get the volume down to an acceptable level for domestic use if you dont mind too many complaints!

Hmmm, if that's true then why do they go up to an infinite resistance value? Isn't the point to make a powerful head usable in any circumstances?

Yes it is, and they succeed in theory, but in practice too much attenuation takes away to much tonal quality. but they are great, and take a lot of volume away without this problem, its only past a certain point when they dont work so well.
