Middle single coil choice...
« on: April 30, 2008, 08:12:41 PM »
Right, I have chosen my humbuckers (not bought yet, you need money for that) and now I have a dilemma:  what pickup do I throw in the middle position?

I'm going for a Nailbomb set of 'buckers and I need something to compliment them in the middle; my guitar is an Ibby S470 and i mainly play metal but obviously the songle coil isn't for that; all I'm really looking for is versatility and I know nothing about single coil pickups if I'm honest.

I await an answers, thank you in advance everyone.

If you're generally awesome, you just leave the middle pickup slot empty

If you're not generally awesome, I'm guessing a Trilogy Suite is the most matched single to the NBs. I've not experienced any of the BK singles though, so wait and see what others say.

I'd say Mother's Milk for Hendrix moments or Irish Tour to go with your macho humbuckers
BKPS: Milks, P90s, Apaches, Mississippi Queens, Mules, PG Blues, BG FP 50s, e.60s strat custom set

I'd say either a Trilogy Suite or an Irish Tour myself

I thought if you were going to say anything then you'd say that  PDT_020
However I'm not as awesome as you so I'll have to say no thanks  PDT_008

The general concensus seems to be either a Trilogy Suite or Irish Tour, does anyone know what the differences really are or anything?

In the Nailbomb HSS set, Tim has two Irish Tours to match with the Nailbomb.  That seems to be his recommendation, but something else could be better for your playing style.

Think Tim is the guy to ask to find out mate, it really depends on what you want to use it for, and how. Do you know whether you're going to be using it in conjunction with the humbuckers (coil-split or otherwise) or on its own?

IMO it's between Irish Tour, Slowhand & Trilogy.

I'd lean towards the Irish Tour because that's what they match with the NB bridge in the HSS set (plus it's the only one I actually have in the middle pos).  Judging by how it balances with the HD in my strat, it would work great with the NB.

I've never heard a Trilogy in the middle pos, I only have a neck model - it's pretty damn pokey, certainly enough to keep up with the HD bridge in my Charvel, so I guess it would work OK.
BKPs: HD, MM, NB, PK, CS, Ab (b&n); Am (b only); VHII, Tril (n only); IT, Slow, Sult (m&n)

i tried a middle slowhand in an hss strat of phils. it good and middy, a bit like a p90. very usable lead sound. i liked it.

you wouldn't use the meat knife on crusty bread but, equally, the serrated knife and straight edge knife aren't going to go through raw meat as quickly

I have an Irish Tour with my Nailbomb with a Cold Sweat neck.  The combination works well and gives a lot of useful tones without droping off the volume much.   It also works well in combination with the Nailbomb and Cold Sweat.

I have the Trilogy Suites with a HolyDiver, I think they work really well for more aggrssive single coil sounds.  The Irish Tour is a more traditional sounding Strat sound.
So many pickups, so little time

So if I used an Irish Tour in the middle would that get me more sort of vintage strat tones even with the Nailbombs as split-coils?  That's more what I'm going for, not so much a kind of agressive strat sound but more like the old bluesy tones if that's possible.

I think a Slowhand would do a good job there.
Send three and fourpence we're going to a dance
