PG Blues - Guitarist Magazine loves them - Well done Tim!
« on: May 10, 2008, 09:12:26 PM »
Just wanted to say congratulations to Tim and the guys for getting an entire issue really dedicated about the new pups... it seems every other page has some subliminal message from the writers about how they love 'em  :D

So, to BKP's *raises glass*

+1 on that. They even said that the price you pay for them is more than worth it! I really need to get myself an LP now just so I can upgrade to PGs!!
I think I hate being indecisive.

Its bizarre, I don't listen to Green, I have no interest in that style of music, they would be completely impractical for anything I do, they would take a good chunk of my pay check..... but I now want to try them

Thanks Mick Taylor and co

its good because from what i have seen of the radar (guitarist) forum they mainly portray BKP's as an overpriced luxury... for me they have become a necessity

I am happy that the magazine recognises the quality even if certain (pickup making, perhaps???) members of that other forum dont want to admit it

For someone like me BK's are an expensive luxury, but not overpriced, for a serious player or professional musician I'd say they were a inexpensive necessity.

It was really great to get such a good review for the PG Blues humbuckers and reflects the amount of work that went into them.
I'm not entirely sure where this 'expensive' thing comes from- a pair of stock Gibson classic 57s are almost £240, if you can get them, likewise SD Antiquities-buying our pickups in sets  at £190 works out at £95 each for covered humbuckers which for a totally handmade pickup is not expensive.I believe it's a fair price and reflects the amount of work that's gone into each pickup-also the prices haven't changed in the 5 years we've been trading.

It doesn't make sense to me either.

A Seymour Duncan JB is about £60/£65 online, more in shops.

You pay £30 extra for a hand built, custom built, custom finished, piece of kit which can truly transform a guitar.

there are always those people that are convinced there £25 replacement pickups are the best thing in the world and beat anything else out their for any price... thats the kind of attitude i picked up quite regularly from the guitarist forum.

I think that quite often it's a matter of paying for consistency.  BKPs are hand made, and so will be subject to QC all along the process - this isn't necessarily true for bigger producers.  Fender and Gibson are classic examples - large name brands, producing some fantastically inconsistent guitars, some fabulous, some tragic.

I don't think it's necessarily true that you get what you pay for.  Sourcing products that are properly controlled, that's the secret.

Mark.

Living in the States the prices are higher (becuase US made pickups are cheaper here and the exchange rate is pants at the moment).  However, once you compare a BK to the others there is no going back.  I am about to fit yet another of my guitars with a set (HSS - Stormy Monday and Sultans), and don't think that there is another pickup made today that has the tone of the BK's, whether they are vintage or modern voiced.
So many pickups, so little time

Congrats on the good reviews, Tim.

I can see how BKPs arent expensive by UK standards but I can sort of see the point overseas. A set of BKs is ~$400 and a set of diMarzios is ~$150. That's undeniably a big difference. It's worth it, yes, but I can understand why some people are hard to convince of this.

Just to chip in my tuppence.

Firstly congrats to Tim and his magic elves.

Secondly in I was in a local guitar store and they are looking 105 quid for a single Pearly Gates pickup (yeah I know you can buy them online cheaper but it's a shed load of money for a machine wound pickup)

Sort of shows that members of certain forums are talking nonsense really regatding BK products being really expensive
Goodbye London !
