EQ pedal to tighten up my amp sound

Hi,

Could anyone recommend an EQ pedal that would be good for tightening up the high gain channel on my amp? It's a Mesa F-50 and the gain is not quite tight enough for Melodeath stuff...

The MXR 6 band EQ. Stick it in the FX loop too.

Or you could use an overdrive pedal in front of the amp with the level set to max and gain to 0.

Overdrives seem to tighten better than eqs, at least in my (limited) experience.

Rather get a drive pedal, lower the gain on the Mesa and kick it with the Overdrive. Success depends on the frequencies of the boost as well as the delicate balance between pedal gain (low) pedal volume (high) and map gain (medium) ...

you can put the EQ in front of the amp, so you can cut some bass from the miracle man, and add high mids and set a high level of output

Hmm i think i want to go for the EQ option though because i really want to use the amps distortion (I grown to love the F-50s distortion) and i'm trying to minimise the amount of pedals in the loop to try and save the tone...

What would you say are the best EQ pedals for the job?

I know you're set on an e.q. pedal, but having a tubescreamer type pedal in the front of the amp with the drive on 0, tone where you want it and the volume up a bit work wonders since they essentially remove some of the bass frequencies.

a TS-9 will knock out some of the low end and tighten up your tone alot.  many players have used this trick over the years.  I don't think an EQ pedal will do what you're after to be honest.

I agree, ive tried the mxr 10 band and build a BYOC EQ pedal (which was truly terrible - not sure if that was my fault though!).

but the best thing ive ever used for that is my Keeley SD1

An over drive is the way to go.  I second what waves said, Drive 0 and play with the tone and volume to where you want.

You won't regret it. Get the bloody murder if you can!

I use an OD (bloody Murder) in front to tighten my amp, works very well. me settings : level 8, tone wherever it sounds great, gain 2. I set the amp distortion 3 or 4 points lower.
If you don't want to change your amp settings try : level where it equals the bypassed level, tone where you likes it, gain 0

Unfortunately i'm not able to hear the clips using the bloody murder as the intranet i use blocks soundclick - do you have any clips of it which i can download? Or could you send clips to my e-mail? That would be greatly appreciated.

I think i've narrowed it down to the Bloody Murder (BUT i can't stand the paint job...i find it looks quite quite amateur/BYOC-ish), modded Ibanez TS9 or TS808 OR the Maxon OD808

Can anyone please give me some pros and cons for each pedal?

Bear in mind in using it to tighten up my sound/boost distortion a bit for Melodic Death metal/american metal (Dark Tranquility, In Flames, Insomnium, Lamb of God etc.)
