Author Topic: Turning a mounted pickup into a direct mounted (Read 6340 times)

I was watching Rock Discipline the other day and noticed that on John signature ibanez it had direct mounted pickups but on closer inspection had four screw holes around each pickup.

My brother has got a Schecter diamond series 007 Elite and would like to do the same thing. We had a quick go the other day by simply removing it, but the pickup up cavity is too deep. If anyone has any advice it would be much appreciated.

Short of glueing the extra wood in to mount it I have no idea. (probably not the best way of doing it.)

I am also interested to find out though, I have a P90 guitar I'm gonna route for HBs and was wondering to do mounting ring or direct mount.

There are various theories about more bass transfer into the pickup but in my experince it just seems to make p/ups sound brighter.EVH was one of the first and now several companies, Ibanez, Musicman etc employ it.Another consideration is it does away with the look/expense of a pickup ring but it also opens up the interior cavity and mean the spray job and woodworking has to be tidy too.
I think Eddie nailed his PAF onto a Strat body more through it being a quick and solid way of getting a humbucker where once there wasn't one :D
