I think SGs would be perfect if they had a stronger neck joint (not that I've seen problems on any mates guitars, but heard so many horror stories..), and had the strap button on the top horn, I really dont like having it on the back.

thats why the SG i am putting together soon is a through neck and has a recessed dunlop strap lock hidden behind behind the top horn!!!.... as well as a few other little tricks to make sure it balances really well despite having a 24 fret, 25.5" neck

this is what i was planning to do for my next build Wez!!!  YOU STOLE MY IDEA YOU bar-steward!!
BKPz: Nailbomb+VHII, more to come...

My favourite SG neck is on my Epiphone Prophecy. Then the ones on my SG Goddess and SG Supreme. Then again, the neck on my special's not too bad...
And yes, SGs are just lovely...

How is the Prophecy anyways? Good? Bad? 10/10? Lemon? Amazing?

Well... nice slim, smooth neck (the matt finish helps a lot), graphite nut so it stays in tune well. I'm getting a tad fed up with the volume knob - it's in a very strat-ish position (for similar reasons) but I keep catching it and turning it down. The dirty fingers pickups are good enough to live with. I prefer the painkillers in my Les Paul, but...
The finish is good - you may prefer flame maple rather than quilted...
Oh yes, and with 24 frets and the wonderful SG upper fret access...
Overall, I'd give it a good 8 out of 10, if we ignore the price. Taking account of the price, I'd give it 10...

One of my mates here, an ex-pat Brit, got an SG in the States when he was student and brought it over to Colombia on his first trip.  He got married and was moving back to the UK, and gave it to his brother-in-law -- but his brother in law is pretty much an acoustic player, and just kept it under his bed!  Now my mate is back here in Colombia again after a few years in the UK, and is trying to figure out how to get it back without looking like he's nicking his own gift ;) And I'm wondering if I can buy it off the brother-in-law for a cut price! Oughta be in near mint condition, however decent an SG it is otherwise.

I dig the SG shape and lightness -- I even kinda like the strap button on the neck/body join. However, already having an LP, I've been attracted by the idea of an SG body with a 24-fret neck (blasphemy, maybe, but still ...).  Actually, I'm almost into the idea of an "SGcaster", with 24 frets and an HSS configuration -- but I'm not actually sure I'd know what to do with that many pickups (being a long-time LP "HH" player)!  Maybe, then an MQ in the neck and something else in the bridge .... That Warpig I've always dreamed of maybe?   Or perhaps something slightly more refined to bring out leads with those extra frets ... a Painkiller or HD or something.

Ah, gear dreams!  8)

I usually prefer 22 frets over 24, because the neck pickup sounds that bit warmer, but I've never understood why SGs don't have 24 frets as standard.  I'm sure you could squeeze the extra 2 frets into that big gap between the end of the board and the neck pickup (I haven't actually measured it, so maybe you'd need to move the pickup a little, but only a millimetre or two).

My SG-Xs have 24 frets (but no neck pickups) and it works well - that SG neck joint makes the top frets easily accessible.
BKPs I've Got:  RR, BKP-91, ITs, VHII, CS set, Emeralds
BKPs I Had:  RY+Abraxas, Crawlers, BD+SM

well, if you make it 25.5" scale length with 24 frets teh proportions stay pretty nice.... and hopefully i should be able to back that up with hard evidence really soon!!

Yeah, I know what you mean, though I've got my LP to provide fat humbucker warmth with 22 frets. :)

Ah!  Just what I was thinking! :)  And somehow I'd never heard of the SG-X until now! But now that I've googled it -- mmm, looks nice!  That with some interesting BKPs would make me a fine alternative to my Crawler-equipped LP.

Well, they only made them for 2-3 years in the late '90s, so it's perfectly understandable not to have heard of 'em!  :)
