ok, so i'm in a band that plays music such as Shadows Fall, a little bit of Killswitch Engage, but also a fair amount of Avenged Sevenfold.

Now, I have been advised to get a Painkiller to substitute my bridge pickup in my SG, as i'm not too fond of it to be honest!

I have heard wonders of a pedal called the ReezaFRATzitz, with people saying it's like "the best pedal in the world". Now have any of you guys ever played on one of these? As I am looking for a pedal to suite the needs of music for the afore mentioned, but i'm not sure what to get.

At first, I was looking at Boss Pedals, so maybe a Metal Zone pedal or something, but having never used one, I wasn't sure.

Any suggestions guys?

Cheers,

Ben.

The Metal Zone is pretty widely regarded as one of the worst pedals Boss make :p

What amp are you playing through? Is the pedal acting as a boost, or going into a clean channel?

Oh right! lol, someone said they were bad, but I wanted another opinion!

I'm using a Peavey Valveking Head and Cab, which aren't really that good in my opinion, but was 14-15 when I bought it and didn't have a job, and it was quite cheap in comparison to most valved heads (probably because it's like the worst one, but hey! :p) so I will probably replace the head soon, and the pedal would be going into a clean channel.

There are alot of good metal distortion pedals around, but high gain allways fetches quite a high premium.

Personally, I'd look at the Zvex box of metal, and the Damage Control Demonizer.

Not played the Zvex personally, but clips etc sound great, and it has a good reputation.

And about the painkiller - Its a great pup, but I can't say if it will suit your needs, what tone is it that you're going for? Do you want to sound like killswitch, A7X etc, or just play their stuff?

You'll find that there's a BKP for most metal tones, and they're all as good as each other, but different. (Eric may want to claim Holy Diver is better than any of the rest though :P)

Edit: Oooh forgot - Look at the Blackstar Dist-X pedal aswell, that's meant to be the dogs bollocks.

I was told that Painkiller has a good mid, and Shadows Fall use a lot of mids, but i'm not really trying to get their tone, I just want a modern metal pickup that sounds good for most types of heavy rock/metal,but one that's not too metal, as I would never play anything heavier than Killswitch, and don't really play Killswitch that often.

Hence my original plan for a PK.

I have a ReezaFRATzitz and love the sound of it.

I find it to be a very versatile pedal with a fair bit of gain on tap too :)

When i was trying out valve amps I found the valveking to be rather good through a decent speaker cab, the valveking cab is probably fitted with some of the worst speakers ever. So I would think about possibly changing the cab before changing your amp, something with vintage 30's is always a safe bet.

Other than that the painkiller would suit you very well.

How about the Distortus Maximus by Krank? I've heard great things about that (incl. many 5 star ratings in guitar magazines) - the amount ofgain on that is ridiculous and it sounds thick! Very solid metal pedal..

Also, KSE use the amp's distortion but boost/tighten up their sound with a Maxon OD808 which you might want to look at...

PS: I'm trying to get rid of my Boss MT-2 (metal zone) for 15 quid if you are interested? It's distortion i admit isn't great but it works really well as a boost  on top of the amp's normal distortion (put the gain on the MT-2 at 0 and use the EQ knobs to tighten up/at a bit more attack to the sound)

PM me if you are interested!

I know that the lead guitarist in Avenged Sevenfold uses (or used to use) a Distortus Maximus, so that might be a wise choice for that sort of tone if you're looking for that.

Ok guys, thanks, so would you say I should choose a Distortus Maximus over a ReezaFRATzitz?

I personally think the reezaFRATzitz is a more versatile pedal, i have played through one and do plan on getting one in the near future.

The MI Audio Tube Zone is meant to be good for high gain. If their crunch box is anything to go by, its an awesome pedal.
