Strat pickups?
« on: May 18, 2008, 11:14:42 AM »
I am a total newbie when it comes to strats, but i do own this girl:
http://www.espguitars.co.jp/navigator/nst380m.html

High end, definitely. Wood and pickup specs are listed there.

Now, I know it's not a tele, but I don't think I'm hugely in love with the stock pickups. How can I get it sounding more like this?
http://youtube.com/watch?v=s44kEqlNmoI

I do have the amp for it (not the ac30, but something very u2'ey) and the needed effects.
So, what BKP bridge would get me close to sounding like that?

Now, save me creating another thread, here goes another strat question:
the afformentioned problem will be solved with one pre-wired pickguard. I'd like another pre-wired guard that does this

I basically want a few different pre-wired pickguards for U2 stuff. Any thoughts?

hmm, your not going to be able to get there 100% with single coils, but if you really want the edge's tone for vertigo, you're going to need the ac30, the line6 DM4, and as for single coils, i would imagine you would need some irish tours or trilogy suites with baseplates on all 3 positions. that should give you a nice, thick tone similar to humbuckers.
the thing with edge is that depending on what era you want to play from, youd need different equipment.

boy/october/war - stormy mondays ive seen suggested on here

TUF/joshua tree/R&H - apaches for those echoing cleans (streets etc)

achtung baby/zooropa/pop - here your going to need a humbucker with a bit more bite e.g. one of the contemporary 'buckers.

2000's - as for them nowadays, you'd need a combo of all of the above, as the edge switches more guitars during a show than your average musician. when i saw u2, he used a different guitar for each song.
for stuff like the fly, the electric co, vertigo, elevation - humbuckers
streets, with or without you, still havent found - single coils

but yeah, apaches for the clean stuff
irish tours with baseplates for the crunchier stuff.
hope this helps.

one last thing, i once read in an interview, may have been from the late 80's, in which the edge states that he usually keeps stock pickups in his guitars. its more to do with your amp, the right effects, and most importantly, HOW you play the guitar that contributes to his sound.

ps. sorry i cant help you with your second question, would like to incase im wrong

pps. for the amp - i always got some great u2 stuff out of a laney vc30

The Edge is an animal. I wouldn't want to have to pin down how he does what he does. I think it will have more to do with the effects you use and the way you play than the pickups. Good luck with that man!!
