are warpigs "dark" sounding?

Just curious... I keep looking at BKPs, and i always come back to the warpig, but i'm afraid it might be too dark for my bass-heavy rig (marshall 6100lm + mesa standard slant). I'm trying to rid the mud here... but have a cool vintage highish-gain sound as everybody probably knows.

think motorhead, priestess, black sabbath.
I'm not looking for ridiculous bass, just awesome heavy tones with good leads :)

the ceramic magnet warpig is apparently a touch brighter (a common characteristic of ceramic magnets). Alnico V Warpig will sound darker as it's a very bassy pickup.

If I were you I'd go for a Painkiller as it has alot of mids which will balance out the sound a touch and give you that vintage high gainy tone.

You may want to consider "Cold Sweat" too - BKP Tim recommended that when I was looking for a bright pickup.

guitar is mahogany body and neck, maple top, ebony board, steel frets.

i'm not exactly looking for a bright pickup, just fat vintagey hard rock and metal tone like priestess or motorhead.

might help if you guys knew what priestess sounded like...

priestess is a very cool band

no need for a warpig, but it's a great pickup for the style
this pickup has a some kind of built in stoner grind mojo on the mids  :lol:

but their tone doesn't sound like they use high output pickups
probably something low or mid gain and a vintage style mid booster or a mxr distortion+

a black dog + boost would be enough, or something medium high output, like a nailbomb or holy diver (both work great for post-sabbath stuff)

priestess use these Richtone amps which are kinda like marshalls with less fizz and more of a "round" tone if you know what i mean. I'm pretty sure that they plug straight in.

anyways, i waas kinda hoping to get away from using a boost because right now mine is on all the time and i dont want it to be a necessity.

Also i found it funny you mentioned a black dog because i've heard talk of them being fairly dark pickups  :lol:

But yeah, i'm basically trying to roll off my highgain marshall fizz a bit with nice round mids and not too much bass to make it muddy (like priestess), because my amp has 2 tones: high gain and fizzy, or low gain and too bassy; and from what i understand the nailbomb and miracle man have all the treble that im trying to round off in the high gain situation  :roll:
so taking that into consideration, would the warpig be good? I just want to try to tame the fizz without getting way too much bass in the tradeoff.

Anywya what about buying the pig and then just rolling ur volume back slightly, or getting tim to lower the output to reduce fizz. Also maybe check out the iommi pups gibson makes. I got some in an old epi and they sound pretty decent. High output by still got that vintage crunch

i have a marshal 6100lm, its the precursor to the jcm2000's. Its kinda looser, more boomy, and less gain when compared to the dsl.

I use a maxon od808 to tighten it up, and add more crunch to the distortion, and of course more mids. Right now, all my pickups are no-name brand hot-paf style pickups, all with alnicoII magnets ranging around 9k. Well... one set is by rockfield, but theyre pretty much a no-name brand.

After reading that review, with the guy saying the warpig was heavy yet still retaining clarity, my feelings have been reaffirmed once more. Time for me to start talking to tim :)

Sue was playing her Warpig fitted Ibanez s2170 last night, she was playing clean on the bridge and neck, and I was amazed (again) at how good the tone was, she was playing a couple of Radiohead riffs, and ok, it didn't sound like a telecaster, but it worked well, the bass wasn't overbaring, the notes rang out cleanly. Of course then she turned on the gain :)

Warpigs really are a work of art, not right for everything or everyone of course, nothing is, but they are exteremly versatile.

I use Mules for stoner rock stuff. Not sure if they're really ideal but I always get a tone I'm happy with :) I dont have many good heavy clips because I'm cr@p at mic'ing and dont have a very good setup but these are some of the heavier things I've done with em (used a GH50L for them and either a Keeley Rat or Behringer TO800 to boost)
