Mothers milk question
« on: May 22, 2008, 03:24:19 PM »
Hey guys, seems a friendly forum so I'll post this question :D  I know the mothers milk pickups pretty much nail the Hendrix tone ( I can't play like him but through the wonder of technology, I can sound kinda close   ) but I want a bit more kick in the bridge, think jane's addiction before navarro switched to Prs. By the way, I play a levinson blade texas standard (same specs as a strat but with a really cool mid boost)

Hi

I'd certainly be putting that question to Tim, it sounds to me like you have a pretty good idea of what tone you want, and generally Tim is the best at nailing these sorts of questions.

I'd love to help but I haven't a clue!

Try a sinner in the bridge

I play MM's in the neck and middle positions.  I love them.  You are right on about copping Hendrix tones with them.  However I too like a bit of kick in the bridge and I went with the Sinner in this position.  The combination for me has been perfect.  Not unbalanced, not too modern sounding or anything like imagining you are pairing a metal style pickup with the MM's.  The sinner is very warm and organic.   The Sinner does a great job of adapting to your amp...You can do hot blues with it, Gallagher tones, P90ish territory or metal.
It cleans up well and sounds like a single coil (although it can go head to head with many humbuckers).

It is actually one of the most versatile bridge single coils I have ever come across.  Totally the best sounding.

Didn't think of that, interesting  I got on to Tim and he said maybe an underwound stock mothers milk or a baseplate, I'm just gonna go with his advice but now I want to try that combination too! Oh well, one more strat clone to be added to the collection then

Hi,jms !This is quite interesting for me as i would like to swap the stock Pu's in my Strat JV for some BNK's  8) and i was not sure about the bridge Pu.I thought about a Crawler but i would have to mod the JV,so,the Sinner would be better suited...but what about the "in between" tones with the MM-middle and the Sinner together? No problem there?(And i really don't play Metal at all !Although i like to play heavy sometimes :) but, really,no metal tones for me  .)The Sinner rating at 21k in Output and the MM's at about 5,7k ,i thought it wouldn't work well  but if it does,it's all good news!

If you're wiring in the usual way (in parallel and in phase), then I wouldn't expect they would mix well...  as the MM should dominate the Sinner. You might be able to get a useful notched tone by wiring them out of phase or by wiring in series, though.
BKPs (soon): CS, TS.
Ex-BKPs: Abrax, NB, SM, PK, Mule, WP.

If i understand jms4250 correctly, the Sinner would work fine with the MM's,in all (5)positions,i guess...but i just want to be sure.

For me the Sinner works fine in all positions with the mothers milk...I too was worried about the in-between tones but I do not hear a problem....Its not totally vintage correct however and maybe not the best route for achieving the ultimate in quack but the in between tones are still way better than stock...Again, I don't hear anything wrong, but it I have never bothered to do a direct comparison (probably will soon)...My wiring is conventional....Thats the only way to go with BK singles....vintage wiring all the way sounds best...

In between tones usually have a lot of dependence on the relative pickup heights.  When dealing with damn good pickups anything is possible.  A BK pickup, no matter what it's intended design is for, is versatile enough to do a lot of things...The sinner isn't just for metal, think of it as a versatile single coil.
