Well, yes, they opened some doors, but you know what, if they hadn't, someone else would have. I think that goes for pretty much any and all musical innovators, someone else was pretty much always doing the same thing at the same time, it's as much to do with luck as to who goes down in history and who gets picked up quick after the first one starts making waves.

BUT, they're probably the biggest case of right place/right time the music industry has evr and quite possibly, will ever see.
Teenagers seeing new freedom after things calming down after WW2.
Teenagers having real disposable income for the first time ever.
Them being a very safe, friendly and above all WHITE face for black influenced music, saving parents from militantly opposing more overt music like Presley.
The invention of vinyl records allowing music to be distributed like never before.
and dozens of other things that just led to the circustances being absolutely bang on for their massive success. Without a shadow of a doubt had The Beates been formed a decade earlier or later, hell, five years or later, the chances of any of us knowing who they were are almost zero.
