Does anybody else think that the White Album isn't a proper Beatles record, but rather a set of solo albums [albeit solo albums which the other Beatles play on] stuck together? :)

^ If you think it sounds a bit disjointed it's probably due to the amount of LSD consumed whilst making it! There are some gems in there.

Oh yes, there are.  I was just under the impression that they weren't talking while it was made.

The White Album was a little disjointed and definately was during the period when the atmosphere in the band was vey poor.Ringo left the band  during the sessions ( hence the drums on Back In The USSR being played by Paul) though in spite of it all, they manged to come together and get the double album out ( though George Martin has said that they should have cut some of the songs and produced a great "single" album). There is a lot of solo material (i.e. where the others played little or no part) and yet there are little signs of friendship (the lyric "The Walrus was Paul" in John's "Glass Onion").The album was follwed shortlly after with the "Let It Be" sessions/film but amazingly after all that, they went on to make Abbey Road though by then they'd pretty much decided that they wer egoing to split and all wanted to go out on a high  though Let It Be was released afterwards.

I don't think I could say that I don't 'get' the Beatles, and that they had a huge influence on Modern music, but I couldn't really get into them, they just weren't to my tastes.

Regarding Paul McCartney, I know its through no fault of his own, but if the man isn't constantly releasing amazing music, the media should stop feeding us a commentary of his life and focus on people who are actually breaking ground in music TODAY, and while I acknowledge his influence and everything, there are so many great, current bands who are creating amazing, innovative music and who receive not a shard of media recognition.

I have no gripe with the Beatles, but the media (including certain shitety magazines such as Rolling Stone, but thats a different matter) never cease to piss me off.

He and his band put Britain on the world map as far as Music is concerned and all the other bands and styles owe them that.

Lennon was murdered by a nutcase in the entrance hall of the building where he lived.  Harrison was attacked by another nutcase, in his own home as you said, but died of cancer two years later.

What does that prove?

The grammar and spelling here displayed make me want to stab myself in the eyes.

Aside for me being a Grammar Nazi, what the hell has that to do with anything anyway?

Put Britain on the map in terms of music?  :?

I do like the Beatles, but I do not buy the "they did so much for music and are untouchable critically" thinking.

Well, yes, they opened some doors, but you know what, if they hadn't, someone else would have. I think that goes for pretty much any and all musical innovators, someone else was pretty much always doing the same thing at the same time, it's as much to do with luck as to who goes down in history and who gets picked up quick after the first one starts making waves.

But we'll never know, will we?  As it turnd out, it was the Beatles who opened those doors and that - to go back to the thread title again - is why Macca makes the news.
