Author Topic: Unusual 7 string guitar and I love it (Read 12189 times)

Roger Mcguinn from the Byrds (Mr Tambourine man , 8 miles high , etc) has been playing a 7 string guitar for quite a while.
Now we all know him for those wonderful jingle jangle 12 string rickenbacker sounds

What he has is like a standard 6 string guitar but he has a second g string but tuned up an octave like on a 12 string right next to the regular g string.
so it's just like a 6 string all except for the G string where it is like a 12 string.

It lets you play all kinds of stuff and the mid frequencies just have that extra sparkle and depth. You can do lead licks and it sounds full when strumming. You don't have to change how you play either.

I'm sure I've seen or heard of that before, seemed a bit weird to me though.

Wouldn't having 2 G-Strings be a bit odd, especially if they are an octave a part like a 12, but only on 1 string?... It'd probably get a bit confusing.

Maybe I'm missing the point, but why not just a normal 12? (It's still a beautiful guitar though)

kinda feels like a 6 string and easier to play than a 12 string but get strumming and the extra texture just jumps out - heard Mcguinn playing it on the Twit podcast (This Week In tech) and it sounded great.

yeah, 12s can be hard to play (especially the EAD strings) and i suppose they can get "muddy" in a way. that's a pretty nice guitar, don't know if i would want one though...

Hmm- toying with doctoring a chap 6 string jumbo or dreadnaught
Dowel and redrill headstock, a new nut , dowel one hole on bridge and drill two in it's place.....could be interesting

haha! that sounds like a good idea, but how about doing that for the G, B, and E strings to make them all a bit fuller? I'd definately be more attracted to a guitar with that done.

A BC Rich Bich 10-string is nice for that kind of stuff. Jingle jangle and powerchords in one guitar. :D

Me too. Or a Koa Mockingbird. I tried to buy a Kasuga Mockingbird from the late '70's. They are exact replica's from the Nagoya Japan factory. The seller never replied.
