Author Topic: Could neck pickup sound like a bridge (Read 11082 times)

I read some stuff on the the internet which says it can not be done due to the string height and vibration over the pups, but I figured I ask anyway.
I got a gibson sg standard.
I was going with the Alnico V Mule set as Tim suggested, but still have that urge in the back of my head to get the mississippi queen set.
Then I thought, I rarely ever play with both pups on @ the same time, so maybe I could get the mule bridge and get the mississippi queen neck so I could get both different sounds that the SGs are known for having. Could the mississippi queen neck be adjusted somehow to sound like a mississippi queen in the bridge?
Like could I get The Who sound from Live At Leads from a mississippi queen neck pickup? Or am I gonna have to decide on either the Mule V set or the Mississippi queen set?

I don't think so. The string vibration is different and there's more wood behind the pickup.

I thinks it's easier to make the bridge sound like the neck, by rolling off the high end. The neck pickup simply does not pick up the same mix of harmonics that the bridge unit does

Tough choices- which bridge HB would sound most like a P90 (other than the MQ)???

A mule would be a good choice - or a Stormy Monday or Riff Raff I would think .

However a guitar with a Mule and a Mississippi Queen would be awesome anyway ( I'd like playing it anyway)

I figure the Mississippi queen would sound better in the neck than a mule neck. For some reason I really never liked the sound of a humbucker in the neck position. Maybe it because I never had a BKP neck..lol
So as of right now I will get a mule bridge and a Mississippi queen neck. I'm guessing they should work really well together.

If anyone has any opinions of my choice and want to recommend me stay with a humbucker in the neck....please chime in...

Time is driving me nuts. I am saving for my 1st BKP set and it is taking longer than I expected. Too many things coming up taking away from the funds. I wish I had the money to buy them right now, so my entire day won't be me sitting down arguing in my head what to get. I just want to buy and be done with it.....lol

I found myself using the neck pickup and the bridge/neck combo a lot more since BKP. The calibrating works. :)

I wouldn't get to stressed out about your decision dude, what ever bare knuckle you order its goona be good.

I know what you mean about time though, i just wanna get all my guitars fitted with BKP's but can't due to funding, just gotta plod away slowly.

How about a VH2, the heavy coil offset brings out the top end!

BKP neck pickups are the cure for the neck tone problem, never muddy, allways clear.

Could the VH2 sound as raw, bright and tight as i am guessing a mississippi queen neck would sound?

The MQ neck is very clear but still quite fat, I've made CED777 two with taps, hopefully he'll come in on this one.
A customer bought a Warpig and 'pigged MQ this week for his SG and he called back in to say the tone was wicked.
The MQ really is a very versatile pickup. If you've never tried out P90s this is the chance, the tone is huge and fat but really defined. In a way it's the ultimate pickup as it really does have the best of both worlds....the fatness of a humbucker with the cut of a single coil.Also putting them in a nickel cover gives excellent shielding against RF which is the only downside to single coils.

So you suggest a mule V in the bridge and a queen in the neck? Or do i really need to sit down and decide on a calibrated set of one or the other to really hear the full effect and sound of how you describe each to be. thanks!!

A Mule V and an Alnico IV MQ would be an awesome combo.......plenty of power and punch from the bridge, great cleans from the neck and the inbetween tones of Alnico V and IV are amongst my fav tones.

I have finally made my mind up without a doubt.

All the great info I got from this site was greatly appreciated. Everyone is so willing to help.
When you ask a question on some other sites, you get the "why don’t you do a search and stop asking the same questions already asked"
This is one of the only sites I know that has that friendly vibe. No question is too dumb to be answered. And best of all you get great input from the makers themselves and related techs that have installed many into guitars.

I feel more than confident the Mule V bridge and IV MQ in the neck will surpass any expectations I have. Once I get the cash and buy the pickups I will definitely post some clips to continue this down to earth forum.

Where in New York are you? I have an Explorer and it will have a Warpig Bridge with the Mississippi Queen neck next week sometime. You are welcome to try it if you are near Hoboken. I also have a PRS with a Cralwer bridge and 2 P-91's if you want to hear the contrast.

I think the difference here is that everyone actually plays guitar rather than just talks about it 8) , real players will always share knowledge unconditionally! No one knows it all so it's great that everyone pitches in together.
