BKP's + clapton style mid boost?
« on: June 30, 2008, 02:46:01 AM »
hey guys

I'm ordering a cold sweat for my new gibson sg faded
it doesn't have any hardware yet, but I already ordered everything, except pickups
maybe I'll install the holy diver in it and put the cold sweat in my les paul copy

I'm thinking of trying this built-in mid boost in the sg
http://store.guitarfetish.com/cstmidbocidr.html

I love mids and I normally use a MXR wylde overdrive working as a clean boost (this pedal adds a lot of mids)

I know Tony Iommi uses a similar device on his guitars and I love the idea, but I'm afraid that the active circuit and low impedance output make my BKP's sound sterile like active pickups do

does anyone have experience with this kind of active circuit?

No experience, but I did buy the Fender Clapton circuit for my Strat years ago and never fitted it.

I was reluctant to rout my Strat for a battery compartment, so I'm interested to see that GFS claim "the battery fits in the cavity just alongside the 5-way switch".  I'll have to look into that.
BKPs I've Got:  RR, BKP-91, ITs, VHII, CS set, Emeralds
BKPs I Had:  RY+Abraxas, Crawlers, BD+SM

There are some entirely passive boosts around, too. They basically give you a big mid-hump boost at the expense of a bit of top end... but without the the need for batteries
BKPs (soon): CS, TS.
Ex-BKPs: Abrax, NB, SM, PK, Mule, WP.

I'm using a Japanese Jackson Dinky with an EMG TurboCharger (a 20dB active boost).  I've swapped the original EMG HZ pickups for VHIIs and I was planning on removing the boost circuit as I never liked it with the EMGs - too noisy, no tone.

However.....

With the VHIIs it actually works like it should!  Like stomping on a clean boost pedal, but it's built into your guitar.  You get a bit more hiss/noise, just like you would with a decent pedal, but it works great.  I don't use it that often as I prefer to use pedals, but it does the trick and it's very useable.

I would think that BKPs with their quality, clarity and minimal noise would work very well with the Clapton mid-boost circuit if that's your thing.
