Amp power supplies/kettle leads?
« on: July 06, 2008, 02:00:37 PM »
Hi everyone,

Just looking for a little advice here. I bought my engl from Germany, so the kettle lead didn't/doesn't fit the wall socket. For the past couple of years, I've been using my marshall avt power supply/kettle lead, but i've sold that amp now (along with the lead). I'm currently using my valve junior power supply/kettle lead, but that means I can't use both amps at once (and means a lot of fiddling around changing plugs if i want to play the different amps).

I've been told by shop staff that any kettle lead will work... I was just wondering, is there such a thing as higher quality kettle leads (like there are with e.g. instrument cables)? I don't want to spoil the ship for a ha'p'orth of tar, but at the same time, if they're all the same (and won't affect tone or the chances of my amp exploding on me), I have an old computer kettle lead which isn't doing anything which'd save me the bother of having to run out to buy one.

Any advice appreciated, thanks! :)

I'm pretty sure it's fine as long as the same fuse is in there, but wait for other replies before you do anything.

Yep they're all the same, and as previously said make sure you have the right fuse.

There are expensive ones, but it's bullshitee if you know with what quality of cables and connections electrics are wired in the house...

Yep, pretty much any IEC lead will do as long as the fuse is the right rating.

If in doubt you can pickup a sturdily built one for <£5 at Maplins (or whatever your local electicals store is).  Alternatively, go & buy a new kettle... :-)

Any IEC type cord would work as long as it's long enough! But why not take the opportunity to try one of these? http://www.russandrews.com/lookup/1/region/UK/currency/GBP/customer_id/PAA0835073908688JTNJTPYJHRZSZJVX/product-The-Silver-Signature-PowerKord-1549.htm

I remember a thread on TGP about such power cables. The general consensus was that it was such a load of old baloney, as all the power has to pass through all sorts of wall cabling etc before getting to your equipment. It couldn't possibly make a difference having a high quality last metre or two.
