Pickup advice
« on: July 21, 2008, 12:36:14 AM »
I've recently bought an rg7421.  I absolutely love the guitar with the only exception being the pickups (same goes for all my Ibanez guitars).  As I've really grown attached to the seven I felt I'd really like to unload to make this guitar go to it's full potential.  No better place to ask about pickup recommendations than here I would say (well I have a faily vast amount of knowledge when it comes to Dimarzio, Seymour Duncan, etc.) but I'm quite dissastisfied with the sound of Dimarzios seven strings.

I use a Peavey Windsor as my main amplifer (stack version).  I have the resonance knob fairly high up so it's quite a bit darker than a JCM 800 but still no where near as dark as say your high gain mesa.  Tone wise I like plenty of mids but not overly bright.  Somewhere between a Swineshead Warthog and Swineshead Venom.  I really need to retain clarity with lots of overdrive as I use a lot of diads in my rthym playing.  I primarily play metal.  I typically play very fast so again I need something that has plenty of clarity.  As of right now I'm between Painkiller and Miracle man based on description on the site.

Thanks in advance,
Tom

Hello there - welcome to the forum!

Yep, the Nailbombs in by Charvel give me loads of mids, and retaining clarity is never an issue.  It's very adaptable, and covers everything that I ask it to do.

Happy hunting!

Mark.
