Pickup Help
« on: July 24, 2008, 12:43:30 AM »
Hello there,

I'm New to the board, and i'm also from the US.

I need some technical info for which pickups would best suit my needs and how i would go about replacing my Active EMG's with these
seemingly god-like pickups.

I run a full mahogany guitar, with EMGs (85 in the bridge, 81 in the neck) through a Framus Cobra.

I want something that will give me a super tight sound, with a tight bass response, plenty of midrange grind based more in the low mids, and treble that just has enough bite to it without getting harsh. and will be versatile enough to have a chimey clean tone.(this would be for the bridge position.)

In the neck, i want something that will gave me a warm full bodied and sparkly clean tone, but will give me a smooth tight and powerful lead sound.

I do want humbuckers. and i do play metal in Drop B tuning. But i Play more along experimental/progressive/metal. Think of the Likes of Pin and Dan. From SikTh. So i need something that will slay in every style i tend to be playing.

And since i have actives what extra steps do i need to take to install bareknuckles properly?(i've never swapped pickups before.)

Thanks for all the help!

Hi Hunter

I can't really help you with the modern tones (I'm a vintage buff) but just thought I'd say hello  :D

The tight bass response and low mids, makes me think Warpig, but bare in mind, that Pin uses Nailbombs in his black machines, and they sound superb.

What amp and guitar are you using?
My last FM.
ESP Horizon NTII.
ESP Viper Camo.
ENGL Screamer.

My Nailbombs definitely give me tight bass and mids, although I'm not really a metal player.  But they're very versatile, much like the Warpig I believe.

I was going to suggest Painkiller or Nailbomb as a place to start looking. Warpig might also be a good option. For the neck, probably a cold sweat, but I've not got one, so don't take my word for it :)

I would say Nailbomb set, with a ceramic magnet in the bridge. Same set that Pin uses. The standard alnico Nailbomb would probably be too boomy in all mahogany especially when tuned to drop-B. Painkiller would be a good choice in the bridge too, but that one has a powerful high-mid cut, you said you wanted the focus more in the low mids. I think I read somewhere that putting a ceramic magnet in the Nailbomb gives it more low mids so it might be the perfect pickup for you. (do ask Tim first though)

I ordered from Jason at peerlestone also. Between him and Tim at BKP, the best customer service I've had in a long time. Can't wait for my pickups to get here.
