Best Modelling amp
« on: September 15, 2005, 02:48:26 PM »
Hi Guys

Can anybody advise me on which is the best modelling amp.

I'm looking for something about 15-30watts for practise, with good clean and overdrive sounds. I'm not bothered about bright distortion type sounds, but a good bassy high gain sound would be a bonus.

I've got a Roland Microcube which is very good, but too small.

I thought of a Line 6 Spider II 112 combo.  Any ideas ??

i had a line 6 spider 2...

one of the sounds is useless (insane), and the others were just poor imo.

spent more time fiddling with it than playing and never found a good sound :(

dont get on with modellers, had a Yamaha DG60 aswell which i found the same thing with!

For a modeling Vox seems to be the best.

It's also worth having a look at the Korg range, particularly the pandora.

It's models to me totally outclass the Line 6 at £90 new and it's practice facilitys it's pretty excelent value (Vai and Santriani apparently uses them for on tour practice).

+1 for the Vox. I have a Tonelab and it rocks like a bar-steward. My mate has a Valvetronix and it's awesome. The Spider 2 isn't a bad amp. Its cleans are beautiful and the 'Metal' channel is good. But the crunch channel is awful, and the 'Insane' channel is unuseable. Get the Vox. Get the 30 watter 'cause you can adjust the wattage so you'll drive the valve at bedroom levels if need be.

i actually use the aforementioned 'crunch' channel on the line 6 a fair bit, but only with a boost going into it, otherwise it is far too weak. The cleans are good though. I just dont like the modelling thing any more, there are only so many bells and whistles a man can take!

I have a Vox and a Guitar Port with all the add on packs - I say the Vox is a great amp, but its electrics are so unreliable and getting Korg to repair it if it goes wrong is nigh on an ordeal (I bought the GP because the Vox was at Korg for six weeks).  Also that thing at the back is just a volume control and does not attenuate the tone other than turn the volume down.  Control it with master volume rather than the so called attenuator and you have a much better amp.

I also find the Vox to have a poor quality speaker that compresses the sound in a bad way.

So I'd say the Vox was so, so - rather than awesome.

Have you checked out these:

Its kind of just like an empty cabinet, into which you stick your POD or V-Amp etc. The difference between it and a cab is, however, that the speaker and cabinet here are supposed to be completely neutral and impart no tonal qualities on the sound - a nice idea when you remember that most digital modelling boxes have amp simulation included within them.

My friend has one of those with a Vox tone lab and it is pretty damn awesome - much better than the Vox combo as you have the modeller driving a real valve amp.

If you can afford a tonelab and an atomic reactor (tonelabs are going for £169 at Soho soundhouse - Id get that combo anyday over a ADVT)

I have one, in my humble opinion it has to be one of the best inventions with regards to modelling. It just sounds soooo much better with a bit of valve power through a decent cab.

Baxter I wish I had got the 15 rather than the 30 - it has much more of a nice practice amp feel.  Also the DI out of the ADVT series is really good - acts like a tone lab.
