Anyone tried a Cornell Plexi 7?
« on: July 30, 2008, 09:07:54 PM »
Hiya, trying to convince the wife it's a good idea to add another amp to the collection. My Romany Plus is great, but
definitely better suited to single coils. I fancy a rocker for the LP( bedroom levels) and heard good reports about
the Plexi 7. Quality is not an issue(it's a Cornell!), but no local stockists so never actually heard one. £645 not cheap
so looks like I'll have to travel to try one. Just wondered if anyone had any experience.

i was just gonna say i hadn't tried the plexi but that i'd tried the romany plus and it kicked ass... guess that's kind of redundant since you own it! welcome to the forum. :)

I haven't tried one, but I certainly like the look of them!  I'll be watching this thread with interest.

I have one and it sounds just like I expected it to. To me (tone is very subjective) it sound like Beno-era Clapton, 60s drive and bite with strong treble, using my LP Standard.

The overdrive levels are dependant on volume and in a bedroom 7 watts is still loud. The reduced wattage settings are good to have but IMO don't sound nearly as good as the 7 watt setting.

Thanks for that, it's interesting that the reduced wattage settings don't sound so good.

Of course it's not at all cheap, at £645.  Would you say it's worth the money?

Not much of a help to you but I would love a small review and / or clips of the Romanay!

I have a Cornell Stinger - the precursor to the Romany
Great little amp - bit like a Fender Champ with a bigger output valve - hence 10w output
The Cornell amps are nicely made but I haven't tried the Plexi 7W myself
Would be nice to hear what it sounds like.

They do look great, even my girlfriend thinks they're cute. Sadly British made amps 'do-a-Mesa' when they come over here, and almost double in price :(

Cheers Dave, and yes, it does. The sweetest amp I ever used, I never heard such a nice reverb. A real keeper.

I may have given the wrong impression of the reduced wattage settings. It's not that they sound bad, they sound great but the 7 watt setting has a little more of everthing. It maybe something as simple as the speaker working harder, or the cleaner sound suits me more, I'm not quite sure. I normally use it on the 1 watt setting, volume about 4. If I want a clean-ish sound, the 7 watt setting on 2. There's amost no clean headroom at all, even with single coils. This is very much a classic rock amp only.

What value to place in the amp is very hard to say. If you want 'that sound' at beadroom levels in a small amp, it could be the one for you. Just to state the obvious, the amp is seriously well made. The problem is if you're not quite sure, it's going to be difficult to find one to try... which is a shame.

I don't have any recording gear ATM, so can't produce a sound clip. I'll try to see if I can sort something out for the weekend.

Hiya Tom, if you like the sound of tweed era Fender amps, the Romany Plus is perfect. £865 was a huge amount
to spend on an amp to me but 5 minutes after plugging in my strat I knew it was worth every penny. This is
proper Fendery valve o/d, no gain knob, all the drive comes from the 6L6 output valve via the volume control.
Plenty of clean headroom in the 10w setting, then not much of a volume drop at 2w, just much earlier break-up.
Quite a drop in volume at .25w with still earlier break-up(can run it flat out at home without too much annoyance
to wife/neighbors). Also has an EQ cut switch which bypasses the tone controls to give much dirtier tone and a volume
boost, though this amp is so sweet without it I tend not to use it. The real advantage over lesser amps is that this
amp is so responsive you can almost go from clean to flat-out drive just by digging in harder with the pick. I can't
recommend it highly enough. If you don't know of Dennis, he is one of the best ( and most helpful) in the business.

I think the Romany is best suited to single coils (Fender guitars/Fender amps, Gibson/Marshall), but that's just a
personal thing. I know they are expensive but hand built, handwired amps are.
Try one & you'll know why!

Thanks Ken, sounds like just what I'm looking for. I get the same feeling about the low wattage settings with the Romany,
still sounds great, just seems to lose a little sparkle somehow. Wouldn't want to put anyone off though, it's a lovely amp.
I'm sure I'll add a Plexi 7 at sometime

Would be great if you could, thanks, but I'm pretty sure I would be happy with it. Still, £645 is quite an outlay so it would be
of help.
