I agree with you gwEm. Nobody does Hendrix quite like he did. Hendrix was very unconventional in his approach to the guitar, and that is what makes him incredibly unique (and nearly impossible to duplicate). Although, I always thought that Stevie Ray Vaughan could do Hendrix like no other.

I like SRV's covers of Hendrix too, but they don't sound like Hendrix, they sound like Stevie-Ray and I like that :P

I'd imagine a lot of the people covering Hendrix are not simply trying to copy him (that would be pointless), but impart their own style on his music. Their style is probably just less incredible than his, which is not surprising!
But yeah I agree; Hendrix tunes sound best rough'n'raw.

I think that the key to Hendrix was his rhythm section.  Like Cream, it was the tight and progressive drums and bass that allowed for all that wonderful guitarness.

I think the problem is when they try to sound like Hendrix and fail. In my opinion the best covers are by people who just throw caution to the wind and go for it, playing the song in their own styles. I love Vai's version of Little Wing, but for completely different reasons than what I love the original version for. I also love Shawn Lane's Hendrix covers.

i hate it when i here some bland cover of angel or something like that... the jimi version is something i would happily play at my funeral - especially the solo jimi in home studio version

Randy Hansen is one of the best known Hendrix tribute guys and I think he gets the feel pretty much exactly right, but throws in his own improv stuff so he's not just an impersonator.

Not talking about Hendrix covers exactly, but some great players like Ulrich Roth and Frank Marino have made fantastic Hendrix-influenced music.  And of course Robin Trower!!  He gets branded a Hendrix clone - and he's never denied the influence for a second - but he takes that sound and takes it somewhere else, making it somehow very "English".  There's no-one better.
