Gary I think you have perfect justification-if your gear earns the money in the first place there is no reason to be embarrassed. In real terms none of my gear has cost me anything either. Good on you mate.

Two exactly the same guitars for instance ;)

Well, there is nothing embarrassing about that setup, don't be ashamed! play it loud!

You're right. It's just that the kids start secondary school next week and we haven't even got the uniforms sorted out yet. Even so, gig money and household income are two separate budgets so it's completely justified

Tried it at home over the weekend but it's so loud I can't really get an accurate impression (definately not a bedroom amp) but I'm taking it to rehearsal tonight so will let you know how it performs.

Played it at rehearsal a couple of nights ago with the LP and all I can say is 'WOW'.  Takes my tone to a whole new level. The only words I can think of at the moment are 'Big', 'Articulate, 'Defined' and other cliches. Sounds best cranked (there's a little demon sitting on the volume control saying 'turn me up, turn me up').

I'll take my Strat next week to see how that sounds but for the type of stuff I play (see 'post your band's set list' in time out) it's perfect. It's the sound I had in my head when I was trying out Marshalls back in January.

It's very loud, even on half power - 17 1/2 w? - , and I wouldn't recommend it unless you're playing live. It will probably benefit from a hotplate and, since there's no reverb, I may look into a reverb or delay unit as well.
