NGD - Style O Reso
« on: August 26, 2008, 04:43:55 PM »
Went up Denmark Street thinking strats and teles, nothing I fancied, so I'm going to wait until the next shipment of Jap Fenders appears...

So I wandered into Vintage and Rare to see if the young lady really is as nice and as knowledgable as I remembered from the other week - and I bought another resonator!

Amazingly cheap for what it does (although of the 3 available it was the most expensive, I tried really hard to like the ones under £500 that are on the V & R website). I tried a National Delphi that was there for 3 times the amount, just to check, and thankfully I prefer this little beasty - phew!

It's a "Republic" Style-O "Reso-Relic", 14 fretter (neck joins body at 14th fret). I tried the 12 fretter but it didn't quite have the tone this one does (nor did the National, actually, which quite surprised me). The girl in the shop came up with it when we were trying to describe the tone (after I'd decided which one I wanted), she said "that one actually sounds old..."

It's got the bite you'd expect, but it has a more rounded body to the tone, more bottom end, so it's less prone to sounding "banjo-like". It has the single-cone resonator sound that I love but have never been able to reproduce with the one I have already (methinks I might want a recone in the old one...)

I also fell in love with the Dunlop slide she gave me to use, so she threw that in the case as well. But now I've got the geetar home, I've found that my old bottleneck really brings the tone out, and when I want more rasp/sting, my old piece of brass tube (which my first drummer got cut for me as a present in 1982!) gets the job done.

Very very tasty, very happy...  :D

I had been wondering for some time about trying a wooden-bodied resonator "next time" Wez, but this thing snuck up on me and there was nothing with a wooden body there to compare it to!

In general I prefer the mojo of the bell brass bodies, and now I've got one that has "that tone" (almost woody is what I'd call it, funnily enough...) I'm probably not going to go searching any further.

... it's controlled GAS Philly - honestly! eg I managed not to buy a black Fender Japan custom tele yesterday - it was gorgeous, but not quite what I was after. It's gone today (I almost imagined you'd snapped it up). I also managed to restrain myself from getting one of the Mex Classic Series 60s teles (white, mint green scratch plate, rosewood board, alder body) - exactly the look etc I'm after for some Yardbirds, and cheaper than the Jap version, but not quite up there in the neck area...

Also, I've managed to stick to my rule so far - not spent any money I don't have already, or have worked for already (it's overtime money on a big project that is fueling all this). It'll have to stop soon - we're running out of space!

Nice Reso!

Yep, she's every bit as nice as I remembered

Luckily, most of what they have isn't quite what I'm looking for (I did find myself gazing at this Paisley tele for a while though... just a bit too darned pink though... it was almost worth the the £645 to bait Roo with!)

Excellent buy Andy. I have had Resonator GAS for many a year. The Republic guitars caught my attention a while back.

 That's exactly what I thought after I'd posted it Wez...

Excellent buy Andy. I have had Resonator GAS for many a year. The Republic guitars caught my attention a while back.

I'd not heard of them before, but as usual I seem to have bought a "budget" instrument and found out afterwards that they're well thought of on the interweb. I might actually have a used AMG-1 (or is it 2?, have to check) by Vintage to sell, haven't figured out what to do with it yet - however, anyone reading this thread will know that I somewhat prefer the Republic  Also, I think you can probably get new Vintage resonators for somewhat cheaper than they were going for when I bought mine a few years back... (eg, I saw one for well under £200 in Hanks! Not sure what the quality is, didn't touch it, but these things are fairly Heath-Robinson compared, say, to a PRS - so if it's stable, looks plays and sounds right, you're in!)

I suspect that I'll be investigating how to get hold of "continental" spun cones first and give the AMG a recone. If I could improve its tone (and stop it being so shiny!!) then one tuned to G and one tuned to D would be an ideal situation...

You're one of the people I was thinking of when I posted the thread Fernando - I just had this gut feeling that a resonator would be in your wishlist :D
