Any/Many PRS Users in here?

Hey guys.

I just wondered who of you around here uses a PRS guitar? Or more specifically, a Custom 22?

I have what I think is a good lead on a Custom 22 in Vintage Yellow that seems well priced, and just wondered what you guys thought of them?

Great rock guitars by all accounts, pickups can be a bit 'average' in the Customs though.  The 22 will sound a bit more 'vintage' than the 24......

If I like the guitar, then BKPs may have to wait a while, but hopefully the stock pickups are ok enough for a while :)

They'll be bright and OK for heavy rock/metal and won't clean up to well.

Thats what I've read anyway  :)

Yep - Custom 24 & Singlecut

Nicely made guitars with good trem systems & nuts/tuners that stay in tune.

Stock pickups aren't bad - my Singlecut had Dragon IIs on it (which I believe they were putting in Cu22s for a while too) though it sounds 100 times better with the Nailbomb & VHII I put in it...

IIRC the neck profiles on the Cu22 are either Wide Thin or Wide Fat - both really comforable.

custom 24 artist in my avitar.

Love it, want another in black, 10 top with a wide thin and all rosewood neck.

I like the pickups, enough not to want to change them anyway.

I have the regular neck which is thick like a wide fat but has a narrower string spacing, very comfy

Yep (sorry Antag but i like "yep".. :))- Custom22 and 90'Standart 24.The Cu22 is a very nice guitar.Super neck and feel with a near-perfect intonation.Very versatile.So confortable... 8) The Pu's,Dragons2's are not at their best in the Cu22 (but they do give some very good "in between"tones w/5 way,though..).It seems they better fit all-mahogany guitars.I swapped them out for BKP A4Mules.Try it unplugged first and you should have a glimpse of what it's capable of with the right Pu's  :P   NB:to my ears,the Cu22 could have a body with a thickier Mahogany part but PRS has already done that:it's the McCarty...      Good luck with your deal !You won't be disappointed..

Yep, Mira and McCarty Korina.  I know that's irrelevant to the question about Cu22s, but I just wanted to join the party.  :P

PRS guitars in general are excellent, fabulous build quality and playability - certainly better than anything else I've ever owned.  Which isn't to say I've fallen out of love with my cheapies.

Thanks for all the info guys :)

I spoke to the seller again and this is what he told me:

It's a 1997 model

The stock PRS machine heads have been replaced with locking Grovers.

The 5 way knob pickup selector has been replaced with a 3 way toggle and push/pull controls for coil tap/split.

He's got it listed as Vintage Yellow, but he said he'd describe it more as 'Gibson Amber'. As apparently 'PRS Amber' is more Orange in colour.

He also said that it's more of a players guitar than a collectors instrument, and said he'd give it between 7.5 or 8 out of 10 for condition.

Due to him being unavailable tonight, and my being unavailable tomorrow night, I can't actually get to see or try the guitar until Saturday morning. So I'll (hopefully) take along my Little Rock and give it a blast to see what I think :D

Not sure this is necessary - there's nothing wrong with the stock machineheads & every PRS I've ever played held its tuning really well.  HOWEVER - the earlier PRSs had a different locking mechanism to the ones we buy today (IIRC it was a bit fiddly) - the changeover was sometime in the 90s, so perhaps that's why?

Good modification - IMO the 5-way is nonsense. Fiddly to use, pos #2 & 4 sound almost identical (& aren't particularly good).  The toggle + push/pull has more & better sounds & is far easier to use...

Re: the machinehead swap, he said that the locking mechanism on 1 of them broke, so he replaced the whole set with the Grovers that're on there now.

Got the cash all sorted, so just waiting until the morning now to go and have a look :D
