More of an issue is if you need to pull off, tap or sweep, not to mention prebending at tempo on the 22nd fret of an SG is not the easiest of tasks. Like I said, it's a case of what he wants to play. It's not a case of being good enough (jeez man, it's like you're somehow taking this personally  :? ), it's a case of wether it's the right tool for the job. For thunderous riffs and old school leads that SG is an awesome beast, for tech metal speed runs based around the 19th fret, it's realy not what you want.

Who?  I think four or five of us responded your your comments about that Epi SG, and it was all pretty light-hearted I thought.   :?

You're being extremely specific about what's required for your definition of "metal", but did the original poster mention anything about tapping, sweeping, tech metal speed runs or prebending at tempo?  I thought he just wanted a "£200 metal guitar".

I meant Twinfan. I said very clearly in my first post "it depends what he means by metal". I said the SG was a "sweet" guitar, but that it wasn't ideal for certain stuff. What is wrong with that? I wasn't the one who went off down this whole "do you actually need 24 frets" route. I don't have a definition of metal, it's a very broad genre, which is why I said it depends what he meas by metal. However, I would infer from the fact that he wants a guitar for metal as a second guitar that he either wants a faster neck or something to downtune.

You seem to have over-reacted to my post(s) Ben.  Tonally, I didn't see a problem with the SG.  I didn't know Hangar 18 needed a whole heap of stuff (that I can't even pronounce!) playing at the 23rd/24th fret.  We don't all know the ins and outs of the metal genre, and all the minute detail therein.

Like Philly, I just thought he wanted a "£200 metal guitar" and in my eyes it fitted the bill.

I hope he finds something that suits him  :)

Has anyone ever actually been up to the 24th fret before other than to see how damn high it is?

I don't imagine it's a note that needs to be used very often (ever), and even if it is why not just bend up to it?

I use 24th alot... If you're allways playing in E, which alot of guitarists do, you won't need it so much, but if you play in other keys, there are times when you have to have that 24th fret to get to the higher octaves.

Oh maybe just something very very black with devil horns on the headstock, sharp pointy bits all over the place and mega-output pickups.

I think we need JDC to come back and tell us what his mate's actually looking for.

I don't think he liked me pointing out the simple and undeniable fact that if you play a tele, you do look like a complete **** on-stage.

^Truth. And here's proof. Johnny Depp is cool in everthing he does. Give him a tele and he looks like a damn Billy Corgan wannabe.

I guess I've just been spending too much time on more confrontational forums :( The irony is that I actually have an epiphone SG for metal!

Nah not really. If it's any consolation I think it's the other guys that overreacted, not you.

my girlfriend saw the picture of this guitar and commented on "how pretty" it was - proof if any were needed that our women should not be allowed to chose our guitars, lmao

what makes it all the more strange is that her favourite artist is Cat Stevens, hardly know for weilding BC Rich's.

Perhaps she's just seeing the artistic design of the guitar and not the bald, overweight beer-swilling bikers and masochistic teens who are likely to use them.

In terms of design I can think of far better extreme shapes (i.e. ones which don't jab you hard in the ribs every couple of seconds.).
I too use chicken as a measurement.

Schecters are ok, but i find Ibbys better; especially RGs for quality vs. price.
