Need advice about replacing a Burstbucker 3..
« on: August 28, 2008, 09:34:53 PM »
Hi guys, this is my first post here but I've been reading this forum for quite a bit..

I have a Historic Les Paul 54 Oxblood, and I'm looking for some pickups to improve it a bit. The guitar's outstanding but the electric part I'm sure can be improved.

I e-mailed Tim with my tone needs, and he suggested me Mule in the neck and Black Dog or Rebel Yell in the bridge..

Both seem interesting altough I liked the Rebel Yells clips but it was never quite "it", and in all the heavy clips I've heard of the Black Dog it's very bassy stuff..

The stock pickup in the bridge is a burstbucker 3. It's not far from what I like but I'd like more dynamics and clarity while overdriven, and tone-wise more "chunk" when I palm mute playing some modern rock o even punk stuff.

I like the brightness level that the Burstbucker 3 delivers, expecially because I can "meat it up" by rolling back the tone pot, I's something I wouldn't want to lose with a pickup swap.

What do you suggest?

I would say Tim got it right with the Mule and Black Dog combo  :)

I like most of the clip I've heard, I'm only wondering right now if someone has experience of a direct comparison between the B D and the BB 3, expecially about the brightness. I don't want to go for a Riff Raff I's too bright.

I don't have a BD, but I have had Burstbucker's and I have a Riff Raff. From what I have heard, the BD most certainly is not bright. It has a whole lot of growl.
The Riff Raff is quite a bright pickup, lots of bite. The two pickups are a bit on the opposite end of the spectrum in terms of tone. It just depends on what you want. In comparison to the BB's, I would say that the Riff Raff is closer in terms of tone.

On some clips the Black Dog seem bright enough but often it's used for quite dark stuff..On the other hand I didn't like the Riff Raff, expecially distorted..

I'm basically looking for a bridge that has similiar brightness as the Burstbucker 3, but better clarity and more growl, something on the line of vintage hot pickups, nothing too hot..
