pick a combo
« on: September 01, 2008, 08:12:18 PM »
Hi guys,

I'm looking for a combination to replace my SD Custom and Jazz (neck) in my Jackson RR1 (maple neck-through, poplar wings).
Amp: Engl 570 (SE pre-amp) and VHT 2/50/2.

I play shred and speed/thrash/melodic death metal with it.

Now, I was thinking of putting a Nailbomb and Cold Sweat (neck) in it.
But to be sure, I mailed Tim for some extra advice ...

well, he made me doubt  :?

He also suggested a CS bridge and Painkiller ...
So I have no clue. For heavy riffage, the Painkiller should do the job better than the Nailbomb? I also like fluent leads... I have no clue on the CS bridge. It should be something between the other two?

If I should define a sound I'm somewhat after, something like: Nevermore - The Politics of Ecstacy; Testament - The Gathering; Metallica - Ride The lightning.

But I do like the custom and Jazz, so if you could advise me a more defined and dynamic version of the Custom?

All thanks

I have a Holy Diver set in my RR1T & it's become my favourite guitar.  Massive midrange grind, fat fluid leads, warm dynamic cleans - the bridge pickup can do it all.  The neck is bright, clear, defined & sparkly - probably my favourite neck pickup of all.

Having said that, the Painkiller bridge in my KV2 melts faces  & the Cold Sweat neck isn't bad either...

So either Holy Diver set or PK/CS would be my choice when if ;) I get another Jackson...

Wow, nice input (and output  8)) Antag, thanks a lot! I also like your choice of gear  :P

HD cleans are very nice, and definitely worth considering, but the CS leads rule!

Seems it's going to be a CS/Painkiller  8)
