4 semi-quavers, semi-quaver rest, semi-quaver, semi-quaver rest, semi-quaver, semi-quaver rest, semi-quaver, semi-quaver rest, semi-quaver

Is a semi-quaver like the American "Half-step"?

Not that's semitone. The US equivelant of semiquaver is 16th note.

and i agree all metallica albums should be measured up against RTL

Right on!  You are one of the first people to agree with me on that matter, cheers 8).  In any case, RTL is just thrashy as fvck, but i will stop it there - no need to get into a "which is better" debate.  As modular said, it would be boring if we all liked the same thing.

Ah thanks, and that term actually makes sense in terms of physics etc.

I hear down the line that Ted jensen is "Not proud to be ascociated" with this mastering job, and wasnt given much to work with - the mix was pretty much brick-walled when it got to him.

And that distorting kick still sounds intentional - its the kind of thing that lars would probably do *shrug*

At least he remembered to put the snare on his snare drum this time.

For anyone interested in this dreadful record you can now find plenty torrents of the Guitar Hero versions of the Death Magnetic tracks, but mixed and mastered by someone who doesn't think Loudness=Bestness.

An interesting fact is its the exact same snare exact same settings just not EQ'd to $%&#

lars made  abig deal about it in one of the earlier mission metallica videos.

They were horrible on Later... I like their earlier stuff, but this was boring. Seems like more St Anger, only with Kirk playing dull leads and them back in standard tuning. Decent songwriting was totally absent.

Bare in mind, that's the worst song on the album.

Although I'm really uninspired by Suicide and Redemption. It just seems like an endless bluesy jam without any particular bluesy skill or direction, to me. I do like the rest of the album, though. Even the vocals, which people seem to be slamming. They're definitely an improvement over the last 3 albums!!

A step in the right direction...

Hetfield has lost the anger in the vocals :(,  my mate Dave would do a better job.

Spot on, you've nailed it right there.  I always strugle to pinpoint exactly what has changed about his voice, and thats IT - the aggression has gone.

I have always preferred his voice from load onwards, just soudns so much better cleaner.

But his best vocal performance ever was on S&M well that entire performance was flawless from all the band imho
