Trying different speakers in cabs my review
« on: September 10, 2008, 04:16:53 PM »
Well here I am sat at work in my wonderful guitar shop bored to the dying breath then I decided to get
something done in terms of collecting knowledge so I lined up every cab in the shop with different speakers and decided to test them all with the original JCM800 2205 in the shop.

So here is my conclusion.

Vintage 30
Lots of high mids here with a dark top end, I've always been a fan of this speaker but hearing it next to other
speakers I hear this high mid peak that annoys people instantly very much in a range that hurts the old ear lugs.
nice overall tone though one of my favourites and really shines when u whack some volume through it.

Black Backs from 70s
Well this are Post-Rola Celestion Greenbacks and I think they sound down right horrid, really raspy and thin
no bottom end and none of that crunchy buttery mids that the Pre-Rolas provide, not impressed.

G12T75
Lots of highs lots of low end and a sizzling mid range, Im a fan I like it I think they're good but I must admit they have something in the high end that makes them sound somewhat brittle unless they're pushing masses of volume.

Hot100
Well these are my favourite so far tonnes of bottom with a thick dark mid range, tamed treble and enough balls to break your face open, they're essentially T75's without the harsh highs and extended low end. and for £29.99 each? simply cannot go wrong here I think everyone should try this speaker.

G12H30
Classic rock it's here! nothing but crunchy mids and great treble, even a nice rounded bottom. I'd suggest these also.

Sound City Custom Speaker, Not as bad as the Black Backs but they're not impressing me.

I think I'm gonna have to try out the Hot100's sometime, everyone seems to think they are great. I've currently got 2 g12h30's and 2 greenbacks in my cab which i am really happy with, but i'm so curious to hear how the hot100's sound.
Which shop is it you work in?

I have two v30's and two Hot 100's in my new matamp cab, and love it! Best of both worlds! The Hot 100's still need breaking in a bit though

I have two T75s and two T100s in my Matamp cab.  Very nice combination, which surprised me.

Woo Hoo!  :D
Not much in it, I maybe preferred the GB's by 10% in a direct A/B test. The slight sonic advantage is outweighed though by their lower power handling, which might be borderline for my JTM50

Yep - power handling is an issue for me.  Two Greenbacks won't take the Mighty Klipp on full chat, but the Hot 100s will.

As Martin sys though, there's not a lot in it and you can use the amp EQ to negatate a bit of the difference.

i've just ordered a hot100 to try to save an old Laney hybrid amp.  selling the amp will make me next to nothing so i figure it's worth 30 quid to see how it sounds.  it can sound ok now, but pretty flat beside my el diablo.  i'm hoping the speaker will breath new life into it.
