Alnico 2 or Alnico 4 in a mule? I need advice!
« on: September 20, 2005, 03:42:31 PM »
Well guys, now i've finally decided on the brigde pickup i'll use in my custom guitar project; a "The Mule" !

But, seeing that Tim offers it with either Alnico 2, or 4 magnets, i'm not sure what to pick.... could anyone tell me the pro's and con's of either magnet?

Thanks alot!

-Erlend

Alnico 4 is what Tim recommends I think. I think he described Alnico 2 as the poor mans Alnico 4 or something, apparently A2 is muddier etc.

Alnico 2 sounds very muddy and undefined, whereas the Alnico 4 is alot more balanced.I think thats what Tim told me when i got my Mule?!?

These descriptions turn you off the CC, PG and A2P doesn't it? LOL.

AII is a strange one.............in a low output humbucker, sub DC8K it can sound bright with a slightly hollow mid and warm/clear highs. In a more powerful pickup, say DC14K it is all mid with a syrupy high and mushy bass.
Like all things, in the right application it can sound great but in comparison AIV is better balanced, a touch more power and clearer highs.
for the Mul I always go for AIV...................a Stormy Monday sounds great with either although I'd never recommend AII for a neck slot, it's just not defined enough.

what's worse is that i specifically comissioned mine to be A2 instead of the normal A5... thought it would be more suitable for a neck pickup
ahh well that's how one learns...
