Nolly....

I hear that you've got a new Diezel RL cab. How does it sound?

Jamie from Diezel UK is still trying to sell a cab to me & I ran in to him making a delivery last night!!
A-Pig 7s, Miracle Man & Mule, Cold Sweats... Expensive kit and no talent posse.

Hey dude, I think you've already seen the post on ss.org, but I'll copy it here in case anyone else is interested:

Let's start with a story:

The day I collected my Blackmachine, I went to Doug's house, he handed me the guitar, plugged me into a VH4 and... WHAM. The sound was unlike anything else. I had to have a VH4.
And so it went, I got the VH4, and while it sounds excellent, it was never quite like the sound I heard that day. I put it down to just being on a happy overload that day.
But I've had it niggling for a while. I've found there's been this icepicky high that has been difficult to dial out, and more recently at rehearsal, found that the lower mids were particularly muddy, and really made me flounder in the mix.

New cab fixes all of that. The highs are prominent but not harsh - I can run my treble wayy higher than before, get lovely clarity and punch, but without bleeding ears. The lower midrange is defined and clear. The whole package is just so much more musical. Also, cleans are just unreal.

Interestingly, up until yesterday, I assumed the front-loaded cab was for me. As much as I wanted to prefer it, I just couldn't get away from how much better the rear-loaded sounded with the VH4. Perhaps with a Herbert it's a different story. You know that if you go in with a pre-supposition, and get convinced the other way, that you've made the right choice.

Also, the Orange is not a bad cab. Far from it. With the right amp, it's beautiful and musical in all the right ways. The VH4 is not that amp in my opinion. I'm keeping the Orange for the future - I can see myself getting a Cornford or similar at some point, and I imagine the combination with the Orange will be far more favourable.

I use an Einstein with a Rear loaded 2x12 Diezel cab. In my opinion the rear loaded cabs are richer sounding. The 2x12 I find has greater definition than the equivalent 4x12 and made the choice on that basis.

I heard your B2 when it was completed Nolly & I thought it was perfect with the Pain Killers in.  I am fortunate enough to get to see, hear or play 90% of the Blackmachines Doug turns out him being an old friend (very tallented one). I am in line for a B2 this year and am going to have pain killers installed, but will bear in mind what you said about highs somewhere in another thread as the body is going to be mahogany with a maple top.

I'm a barman. I do work pretty damn hard though, and I happen to be in a fortunate position where I can save pretty much all of my earnings to put towards equipment.

Ah that's very interesting Martin. I believe Doug may have mentioned you before - are you looking to have your quilt top finished a lot lighter in colour than mine?
I hear what you're saying about the Painkillers, perhaps now that I've realised alot of the icepick highs were coming from the cab it might be worth giving them another chance. I'm definitely not done experimenting with pickups, I've liked all the BKPs I've had so far, so it's only fair to give the other models a chance too I guess.
What did you hear my guitar through, the VH4 at Doug's?

I heard your B2 through my Einstein Doug wanted to hear it through that along with a B7 he had finished about the same time. I honestly thought it had an incredible clean sound bearing in mind it had an awesome shread sound that cleaned into a nice crunch at the roll of the volume. The B7 had nail bombs in which were incredible but no where near as versatile imo.

I doubt my B2 will have a stain it will just be an oiled popcorn type maple. The fingerboard is going to be Zebrano so it should match that nicely.  I have been through the process of many photoshop designs getting it the way i would like it. If i have done it right I have attached a visual of the way its going to look to this post. Still undecided whether the body and neck will have black or ivoroid binding other than that this design is my idea of perfection

:o That looks incredible! You bar-steward. Are you thinking of having the body chambered?

I was definitely thinking of the right person then, you're in charge of Doug's website etc right?

Dangnabit, you're making me rethink the Painkillers again. I've since donated them to my fellow guitarist bandmate Pete (PeteyG on here). Perhaps we shall have a swap-around..

I too played that B7, when I picked my guitar up. It's a jaw-droppingly good sounding guitar, though I hardly got to put it through its paces

Incidentally, here are the updated rig pics with the new cab:

Thats me  :D ...

...to be honest the Blackmachine website was only ever set up as a blog many years ago and was never meant to be anything more sophisticated than that. Dougs highly original and exacting work has come into great demand. I have since designed him a clean website but Dougs workload is huge, its very difficult to sit him down on a regular basis to write copy and get it finished and up.

To those people that have been drooling over Nollys guitar, It sounds and plays as well if not better than it looks I am afraid.

Martin

P.S. Body will be chambered love those wider extra mid tones it gives

Thought so. The website definitely needs an overhaul, hopefully you will be able to pin Doug down sometime soon.

You're right about my B2. It really is a wondrous instrument. Jamie (Leader - Doug's business partner as Diezel distributors to the UK) told me the other night that it's one of Doug's proudest creations. It's ridiculous how perfectly it's made, I've never come across a guitar where such low yet buzz-free action can be achieved.
Chambered definitely seems like the way to go. I wonder if Doug will do 5 (like my guitar) or 6 (like on that B7 - an extra one between the pickups) chambers as standard now..

COULD YOU GUYS STOP SHOWING PICS OF THESE GUITARS, PLEASE!!!
(I just don't have money to buy one and probably it would become wood's dust in the middle of the flight to brazil)

Man, that burl maple is amazing, Gooby...

And sorry about the stupidity, but what's the difference between the rear and the front loaded speakers?
Which speakers on that cab, Nolly?

Nollys cab looks Rear loaded. Front loaded Diezel cabs have tabs on the bottom of the mesh for easy removal.

Front loaded speakers tend to be really tight, hmmm how do i put it.  If you are playing really heavy sounds that have sharp pauses front loaded speakers emphsise this. Think of Pantera and the sharp space inbetween some of the notes. Along with the tightness of sound they lack a little warmth which i guess goes hand in hand with being tight. I think Front loaded tend to be louder and have higher peaks as well though stand to be corrected

Rear loaded speakers are your more traditional  type cab and tend to have more tone in my opinion. They can still do stabby metal but not quite in the same brutal way as front loaded speakers.

Thanks for kind comments on my pic, it  doesn't really exist yet its just a photo composite waiting to be built

What's the difference between rear and front loaded?

By the way Nolly, very nice grab (if not somewhat frustrating for myself).  I guess what is really at work here too though, is that i don't feel like i am personally accomplished enough to even consider saving for this equipment - you on the other hand, deserve it.  How long have you been playing for?

What speakers in the Diezel? I once played a herbert through one of Jamie's cabs at LGS, with K100s, best sound I've ever heard from an amp. Think it was front loaded. But I hardly got to put it through its paces.
My last FM.
ESP Horizon NTII.
ESP Viper Camo.
ENGL Screamer.

The general consensus seems to be that FL cabs fit the Herbert, RLs fit the VH4 and Einstein. Which gets me wanting a RL cab myself!

Nolly, I posted up here before going onto ss.org otherwise I wouldn't have bothered. My band were in the studio on Monday night and I was on a break when Jamie & Andy turned up with Andy Lozek's new Herbert, cab and G System... so I didn't get any more playing done after that point, just nonsense talking and bad posing for Jamie to photograph!
A-Pig 7s, Miracle Man & Mule, Cold Sweats... Expensive kit and no talent posse.
