It's very unexpected of Al I think. I always associated him with black or sunburst les pauls, so even his blue McCartey looked gaudy in his hands. I don't think this guitar is ugly at all, I just think it's way over the top and something I'd expect to see played by Prince.

I like some of his late '70s material, but I couldn't find any YouTube clips with decent sound quality.

I'm not really familiar with much of his later work, but he seemed to go off in different directions - lots of acoustic guitar, but also synthesizers and "world music".
