Couple of pickup questions
« on: September 24, 2008, 09:04:22 AM »
Wow, I've not posted in a while.  So hi again everyone.

Right then, questions about pickups on a couple of guitars...

First.  My Mockingbird NJ Classic (That's a maple through-neck bird with nato wings, ebony board & a TOM bridge).  I've got a Cold Sweat in the bridge of that & it sounds really nice.  Especially with the right combination of drive for a pedal & amp.  I'm thinking about finally getting a BKP in the neck.  I guess the obvious answer is to put a CS in the neck too.  Any other suggestions?

Secondly.  I'm thinking about upgrading the bridge (possibly neck too) of another Mockingbird.  This one is an NJ with a bolt on neck & a floyd bridge. (I'm not 100% sure, but I think it's a nato body, maple neck & ebony board).  I had been using this guitar as a back-up at gigs, but our singer has taken to using it as her main at gigs (bloody women).  So I'm looking for something that'll compliment the CS in mine, but at the same time giving me something a little different for when I get to play on it.  With all the BKP range being mint it's hard to choose.  Perhaps a MM, NB or WP?

Cheers guys,

Simon  :D

A popular Combo I believe is to put a Mule in the neck with a Cold Sweat in the bridge.

So the choice is wide, I guess it depends on what your idea of what a perfect neck pickup should sound like.

I have a Nailbomb set in my Warmoth Mockingbird with Floyd (it is bolt on too).  They sound great in it.  It will be a nice contrast to the CS, especially the neck as the NB is very different to the CS (being AV as opposed to AIV).

Another neck pickup that is sometimes used with the CS is the Abraxas.   I have heard and played this combo in a neck through Shecter and it sounded really great.

I'm pretty sure that both models arre AV, but there might be some special editions I don't know about.

Thanks for the replies guys.  one thing I forgot to mention.... both guitars are tuned BEADF#B.  I'm sure that doesn't make too much difference like :)

I'm not sure want kind of lead sound I want for the neck pickup.  to be honest I don't really play a lot of lead stuff.  I'm more of a rhythm guitarist.  For what it's worth I like the guitar sounds of Tool, Funeral For a Friend, A Perfect Circle.

A nailbomb in the bolt-on sounds like it might be a good idea.

I have got a cold sweat neck pickup thats not in a guitar at the moment. So if you do decide to go down the route of cold sweat neck and bridge I could sell you one.  Equally if you decide to replace  the cold sweat in the bridge that may be of interest to me too.

I don't need a neck pickup for my main now.  I've gone with a CS thanks to Mr Rat.

I'm taken with the idea of a NB for the bridge my second guitar....  What would a MQ be like in the neck?    Would it match ok?  I don't have a P90 in anything at the moment.
