Could anyone help me to choose the rights pickups ?
« on: September 22, 2005, 12:39:15 PM »
Hello,

Reading all the great things about BKP, I begin to think changing my pickups.
I have build a guitar which is a copy of Gibson 335. The pickups are Seymour Duncan '52 for the moment.
I quiet like the tone of the guitar but it is a bit muddy in the bass and the overall sound is not sharp enough for my taste.
I would like a more versatile sound : I want to be able to have a natural fat dirty sound when played with overdrive and a clear sparkling sound without overdrive.
I also own a fender telecaster, so I would like a different clear sound.

I thought of Mississippi Queen because my guitar is cut for Humbuckers. This pickup seem to have both big and sharp sound. Besides, I have already played a real gibson 335 with P-90 and I really liked it.

I'm I doing the right choice ? Do you have any suggestion ?

Thanks for your answer !

As Jonathan said, MQ or SM.  It depends on whether you want the humbucker sound or the single coil 330/Casino sound.  I am thinking of putting Stormy Mondays into my 335 and was talking with Tim on this. He prefers a lower output humbucker, so you can hear some of the sound of the guitar too.  If you go the MQ route, then I would talk to Tim about it, so he knows they are for a 335.
So many pickups, so little time

Thank you !
I must admit I'm very tempted by the MQ.  I think a humbucker will be too fat and a P90 style pickup would have the best of both single coils and humbucker.

It may seem stupid but besides the sound, MP just look great !

Hi,

Per Tim

The MQ really is a very versatile pickup. If you've never tried out P90s this is the chance, the tone is huge and fat but really defined. In a way it's the ultimate pickup as it really does have the best of both worlds....the fatness of a humbucker with the cut of a single coil. Also putting them in a nickel cover gives excellent shielding against RF which is the only downside to single coils.
Mississippi Queen Set = Gibson SG Standard
Warpig = '88 Charvel Model 1

+1

One thing is for sure; BKP's are not muddy. I think even the Riff Raffs would be good in that guitar. They'll give it a nice growl.

The Mississippi queen in one of my favourite pickups, it’s got the most amazing clean tone and dirties up really well too. Both the Stormy Monday and Riff Raff would be good choices too. What kind of music do you play?

Something like indie-folk. Let's say my favourite artists are the Divine Comedy, The Beatles, Elliott Smith, Jeff Buckley, Sparklehorse...
If you want to listen to my music, you can go to my website where you will be able to listen to all the tracks of my first LP :

For that kind of stuff I would go MQ - you get the ability to have the indie-folky single coil sound with added fatness.

Listening to your tracks I'd go for the P90 sound -  I think it will suit better than a humbucker - unless you want to go for humbuckers for a different tone?

I agree with the above. This deffinately calls for a P-90 sound.

Thanks a lot for these good advices and the time you spend to listen. That's very nice from you. I'm going to go for Mississippi Queen P90. I'm sure I won't be disappointed !
