Suppose I haven't done enough P90 research.
« on: September 29, 2008, 12:28:46 AM »
Alright guys, it's about new pickup time.
To start, I'm looking for a P90 with characteristics of a vintage PAF humbucker.
I've always loved the touchy dynamics that you get with single coils, but sometimes I really miss that midrange crunch of a vintage humbucker.
I don't like hot pickups, and that's the problem that you run into with a lot of P90's, they're just too loud.
So far, I like the BKP-90's best, but the description leads me to believe that the midrange will be too smooth for my tastes.  I want something a little bit rude and chunky but still enough smoothness for a nice solo tone.
I guess a good basis would be very early Santana tone, and also some of Wilco's stuff.

I've read where some people have been recommended an Alnico IV P90?
Is perhaps that recommendation on the right track for me as well?

Thanks.

I would say you want the P-91, which has AV magnets.  The AIV magnets tend to be smoother and more musical.  The P-91 has the regular P-90 wind, but with an AV magnet that gives it a bit more push.
So many pickups, so little time

I have a BKP91 with an AIV magnet.  It's quite sweet overall without being weak (which is what I wanted), however I wouldn't say it has lots of midrange (probably needs an extra notch on the mid pot if you get me) - however, an A5 magnet would solve that.

I will say again though that I didn't want a P90 that was too midrangey as I'm playing mostly 60s rock with this guitar and not much overdrive.  I find that if you have a pickup thats too pokey through the mids, it sounds harsh on cleaner settings.

I'd say the A5 BKP91 is 100% what you need.  Bear in mind that the magnet can be easily and cheaply changed if you want to try A2, A3 A4, A5 etc...

Awesome, thanks for the input.  I'm going to search for clips of the IV magnet just to get my bearings on what the tone is.
I've watched the videos here:

and I really like the clean tone from that guitar, but it doesn't seem to clarify as to exactly which BKP model it is.  Maybe the BKP90?
I'm starting to think maybe a BKP90 in the neck and BKP91 at the bridge for the best of both worlds.

I'll probably call Tim closer to ordering time just to clarify everything.
Thanks again.
