What plays well with pigs? :)
« on: October 02, 2008, 06:52:49 AM »
Heya fellas:
I'm gonna order my CPIG bridge pretty soon,
what I don't know which neck pup to get with it.
I'm looking for a nice THICK sounding, high(ish) gain pup that's good for heavy stuff, but also at least somewhat versatile.
I've listened to most of the clips in the players forum, but I still can't decide.
I like the nailbomb and MM, but they sound kind of ... dry or harsh in the clips I've heard.
Cold sweat and VHII sound pretty nice too, can they do real heavy stuff though?

I believe the Cold Sweat neck is what you seek. Ask Tim for his opinions!

the cs neck is not what I'd call thick sounding
the MM and WP neck versions are VERY thick

the cs neck is like hugely improved duncan jazz or dimarzio air classic, but still a paf type

I think the MM neck is bright, but fat sounding, very versatile IMO.
It should balance well with the pig, I think my MM set has 17.5K readings on both bridge and neck, despite very different specs

lol, good point.
I'll dig up some more clips and see if I like 'em.

Any other suggestions?

To the guys recommending MM, what type of woods are your MM equipped guitars made of?
Mine's alder with maple neck so I think it might lean towards the brighter side?

in a les paul
but I tried a lot of pickups on it, and the MM neck was one of the darkest and thickest ones
the WP neck sounds VERY close anyway
I believe they have the same wire, similar winding and the DC resistance was close

My Warpig neck is certainly thick and versatile.  It's the only pickup that I've actually liked the rhythm sound from a neck pickup.  It also gets nice thick and creamy lead tones without sounding too dark and muffled.

I've heard the WP and MM neck are similar, so I don't think you can go wrong with either choice.

I have an MQ neck with an Alnico Warpig and it sounds great.  You could always see if Tim can make you a Pig 90 in an MQ size.
So many pickups, so little time

Now that's interesting.  Never tried one, but I always imagined it would be more along the lines of a DiMarzio PAF Pro (in terms of output and clarity, anyway).
BKPs I've Got:  RR, BKP-91, ITs, VHII, CS set, Emeralds
BKPs I Had:  RY+Abraxas, Crawlers, BD+SM

hmm maybe the output is comparable, but the PAF pro is more flat voiced
the cold sweat has just a slight PAF mid scoop, but not mid hollow like most duncan and gibson neck pups, so it sounds PAFy, but very present
I believe the holy diver neck might be a bit closer to the jazz model

I found back my older CS neck pickup today, together with a brand new and unused HD bridge pickup. I immediately brought them to my tech with my old LP for having those pickups installed with the new pots/caps etc. I really couldn't resist doing it.

The CS neck pickup was just so great and I want that sound back, only now combined with the HD instead of the very trebly RY I used back then. The RY also lacked bass.

nice
what about a review on the holy diver?  :D
