Pickups Choice
« on: October 07, 2008, 06:22:47 PM »
Hello! Im from portugal!Recently ive been noticing that my original pickups were too thin and im currently looking for new pickups!

I went to forums and youtube in search for my new pickups and some ppl said that bareknuckles were the way to go, i went to youtube in search for sound clips and i must say i was very impressed with the overral quality of the pickups and saw a guy soloing with the BK nailbombs and i instately feel in love for them but i dont know if they are the right pickups for me :P.
My gear is a epiphone les paul standard plain top , a peavey classic 30 112  and a EHX Metal Muff and i will buy some sort of tubescreamer maybe the digitech bad monkey!I play blues, rock, hard rock, metal but as i said the originals pickups were to thin and weak!

The tone that im after is:

Neck Pickup- think gary moore, slash, gilmour type of solo and cleans and Led zeppelin,AC/DC classic rock distortion

Bridge Pickup- in my bridge pickup i want to be able to play some hard rock, metal (guns n roses, alter bridge, metallica)
So i want a FAT tone for soloing! I dont something weak and thin sounding.A guy told me to put the mule or the abraxas in the neck and a nailbomb in the bridge! i loved the sounds of this pickups but i dont if they are the right ones for me.

Im asking for you to help me find the perfect pickups for me xD

Im sorry for my spelling mistakes, im from Portugal so it might be many errors in my text :P

Hi,

Welcome to the forum.  Don't worry about your spelling it reads fine.  Im English and still struggle with spelling.
Im going to keep my mouth shut on pickup choice you should go for  im not certain.  Im  sure someone else will have will, have the answer though. There all very helpfull on here. If you have not already checked it out have a listen to some of audio in the players section. It may give you a few more ideas.

Welcome

Hi and welcome.

I'm not too sure either, but I'm thinking Cold Sweats maybe? They are vintage wound but with a contemporary edge (ceramic magnet in the bridge). But there are so many BK's I've not tried I'm probably missing a trick.

Always worth firing an email to Tim.

I shure can recomend a Crawler-set in a Epiphone LesPaul as I got a pair myself. They are FAT and classicrock-sounding but can do quite a lot of different styles.

You can check out my clips here wich I think do them justice tonally.

If you want a hotter tone, a pair of Nailbombs will be fine. Im getting a set for my Ibanez Jem.
Crawlers: more fat, classic rock, Nailbombs: more upper mid little bit more modern sounding.

But... if your heading for Gary Moore or Slash type of sound, this might not be what you are looking for. If I don´t recall wrong, the Abraxas is for Slash-tone? Don´t know about Gary Moore though... Maby ColdSweats?
But... I might belive that Crawlers is what you really want.

Cheers / Daniel

I've seen that Nailbomb clip on youtube and it sounded great indeed. I don't know about the Cold Sweat for the bridge position though...it's very different from the Nailbomb and it has a ceramic magnet. The middle position of a Mule/Cold Sweat wouldn't be as nice as a Mule/Nailbomb. It's your choice going for ceramic or Alnico V.

According to your description, I'd go with the Nailbomb for the bridge.  I have on and it sounds fat and is very versatile.  As for the neck, I'm not too sure, Cold Sweat could do really well though.
