Bridge pick ups in the neck position
« on: October 09, 2008, 07:30:45 PM »
I'm thinking of playing a bit of pickup musical chairs with some of my guitars, and i have a few spare Bridge low output BKP's.

Do you think these would work ok in the neck position when combined with a hot(ish) bridge pup?

Basically ive got a Yamaha SG800 which ive just bought a crawler for in the bridge postion.  I'm not specifically after any particular tone i just want a good neck pup to compliment it.  I have a spare bridge Riff Raff and a Spare Bridge Stormy Monday.

Would either of these work?

If so what one would you go for??

Cheers

I think they'd work fine with a hotter bridge pickup, assuming they're 50mm spacing (although even that wouldn't make a huge difference).

I'd try the SM - the Riff Raff is brightish, the Crawler is darkish and you wouldn't have much of a contrast.  Although the RR might make quite a good tight, focused neck pickup if you like that kind of thing.

(Cool avatar by the way - Zardoz isn't it?  Or Zhardozh in Connery-speak.  :) )

Even though they are called bridge pickups, they are not specifically for the bridge position.  In BK's sets they are matched to the neck pickup, but when pickups were first introduced there was no such thing as a bridge or neck pickup.  Even through the 60's into the 70's, if you needed a replacement pickup, you just ordered the type, not the position.  Only when DiMarzio introduced their pickups did you start to see a hotter wind for use in the bridge position.  This doesns't mean that hotter bridge pickups didn't exist, they were just accidents though.  I remember many years ago messing around with 6 early 60's strat pickups to find the best set for a 63 Strat.  Each of the pickups was slightly different.  The removal of humbucker covers was in part to try to get a hotter bridge pickup, as the pickup is brighter, slightly more sensitive and can be put slightly closer to the strings with the cover removed.
So many pickups, so little time
