Recording equipment questions!!
« on: September 25, 2005, 01:45:47 AM »
Looking to sort myself out with some recording equipment, just to make some clips and capture general ideas etc.

Will be micing my JCM 800 and cant be in the same room as my pc, so i need a go between type thing. (could probably DI into my PC through the amp\MASS unit if i broke my back lugging the head around all the time lol)

I've already got a dbx valve mic pre amp (for £25 woo! http://www.dbxpro.com/minipre.htm), just need to decide on a mic\cables and a recording unit...

Does anyone have any recommendations for a multi tracker (£200 at most, 2nd hand is fine)?

I'm pretty sure an SM57 will be good, heard alot of good stuff about em...does the mic generally come with a cable???

Or do i need to buy one of them aswell, and if so is it just an XLR to XLR?

And for outputting from the pre amp to the recorder is it best to use XLR or the 1/4" TRS?? (will be bypassing any on board pre-amps that the multitracker has)

And where the hell do i get a really small mic stand from so i can position it in front of my 1x12 cab???

I'm googling all the above, but as most people on here are pretty knowledgable id like to hear from ye :) Especially on where to buy the stuff from for decent money!!

Well, I can't help you with pricing, but I can make a few recommendations, gear-wise.

You can't go wrong with a Shure SM57; it's a greatl all-around mic. In fact, all the guitar tracks on the last Iron Maiden album were tracked using '57s; Kevin Shirley prefers it to many hi end mics for guitar work.

Now, then ...

Since you're looking to cut basic demos (1-4 guitars, drums, and maybe some bass), you can go two ways.

One way is to get an affordable stand-alone unit, like this:
http://www.rolandus.com/products/details.asp?catid=12&subcatid=48&prodid=BR%2D1180%2F1180CD

I use a similar unit for recording, and then I export all the tracks onto a CDR and mix on my PC in SONAR.

If you are going to be using your computer for the actual recording, then you might want to use something like this:
http://www.m-audio.com/products/en_us/MAudioBlackBox-main.html

The M-Audio BLACK BOX is a very cool thing! M-Audio also makes other intrument/computer interfaces; check 'em out!

Now then, as far as mic stands go, there are a couple of options.

One is to get a combo stand that also has a mic boom attached to it, like this:
http://www.music123.com/Ultimate-AMP150-i24257.music
I have one just like it; you just have to add a boom arm and you're set!

Another kind of stand you can use is like this:
http://www.sweetw@ter.com/store/detail/DS7Stand

You can use a table stand and just set it on the floor; I have one of these, as well.

I have found that the best kind of stand to use, though, is just a full-size boom mic stand; then you can position the mic EXACTLY where you want it.

The M-box looks like an excellent bit of kit. I think the Adrenalinn is cool too. There is always new gear- thats the great thing about music. The only cure for G.A.S is to yield to temptation- it only last until the new bit of kit comes out but the relief is good nonetheless.

IF you dont/cant use your computer for recording, im selling my FOSTEX D-160 and 24/48 track 8_bus desk for #700. They match really well and you can master stuff straight oto CD. Its a good idea or something similar if you dont have a powerful computer or if you lack oftware to reocrd onto.

Definately go for a Shure 57. I tend to use that 1-2" from my cone then a Rode NT2 about 1m from my amp. gets a great all round tone.

IF you are gona go for computer recording you need a good interface. Possibly Edirol or M-audio, definately go for FireWire too, much more stable than USB or SCI. Any other q's??

I'm looking very hard at the Line6 Toneport, which seems to be a sort of regular USB interface with instrument and mic jacks plus (this could be the winner for me) software amp modes from both the PODxt and Bass PODxt.

I actually splashed on a Tascam USB audio interface back in August, around the time the Toneports were announced, but if the eventual reviews hold up on the promise, I might try going down the Toneport road sometime next year.  Compact, portable, headphone-friendly but decent-seounding guitar+bass amp simulation is like a holy grail for me! :)  Of course, it might be even better if Line6 just sold me the software amp sims as standalones, but I suppose that would utterly gut their hardware market, which is presumably a big revenue generator for them ....

stealing the post here (sorry about that!) but i'd quite like to be able to record from my amp to my PC. what can i use to do this. Either way - mic or D.I is cool, as long as i can get half decent sound. also, funds are obviously limited - i only want something basic anyways, that ain't a modeller.

i've now got my JCM800 head running into my Mass attenuator, which then gos via its Line Out into my Guitarport with no amp models etc, just a 4x12 cab sim\some delay and the pre-amp patch.

Sounds frickin awesome :D

And its all then routed through either headphones or my surround sound pc speakers :D

Yeah, I'd say if you've got a nice amp, you could do a lot worse than run it through an attenuator (Mass, Powersoak, whatever) and then take the lin out straight into the computer/recorder/whatever.  If you've got something that would do, you could even use the real amp that way and then flesh it out a little with a digital cab simulator :)

I've only got a little hybrid combo, so I haven't been heading down that route so far!

('Course, if you've got the ability to just crank it all up and play with some microphones, that can't be beat :))
