Reaper :P

Logic seems to be the most common one.

Logic, Ardour, ProTools.

ProTools 8 will be out soon, which is going to have a vastly improved MIDI sequencing system, which is the only thing that it lacks compared to Logic. I'd probably suggest picking up a copy of Logic Express, as the Pro version doesn't have many extra things (a few extra synths mainly). Ardour is an open-source alternative that i don't have much experience with, but it seems pretty good.
Nailbomb, VHII, Warpig 7, MQ, Black Dog, 10th Anniversary

Not used a Mac for more than 5 mins, but I know that James Murphy (ex-Obituary guitarist, and now producer) rates Digital Performer

If you want one DAW for everything then nowadays Logic is definitely the one to go for. Fantastic program in its most recent form (Logic Pro 8 ). It comes with a selection of good (and sometimes very good) plugins and virtual instruments and is generally very easy to use. There's also a HUGE library of awesome samples which you may want to think about before you install them (~30GB worth).
For the money Logic is a ridiculous steal and the Logic Studio box comes with Logic Pro 8, Mainstage, Soundtrack Pro 2 and all the aforementioned samples, plugins and instruments. A couple of years ago all of those programs together would have cost you well over £1300! I think Apple are offering it so cheaply now because it's SO good, and SO little money that people might just go out and buy Macs purely for Logic. If you can get Higher Educational discount like I did then it's only £118 if i remember correctly. Probably my best buy of all time.
Protools is also very good, especially for tracking; it's a lot quicker to use than Logic, and has a very vast multitude of key commands - it's extremely intuitive and once you've worked it out then it's going to be the smallest barrier between you and your artistic vision I'd imagine. That said; I'm boycotting it due to the company that make it (Digidesign) being bar-stewards; to use protools you HAVE to use one of their audio interfaces which is ridiculous.

For simpler work Garageband is great - perfectly adequate for most people - I know a lot of bands who have recorded, mixed and mastered whole albums with only garageband. It's basically just a cut down version of Logic.

Welcome to OSX :)

I use Logic Pro 8 at college. Got some wicked recordings on it. Great bit of kit.

I aqquired logic pro 8 earlier and it doesnt seem to like my line6 also how the hell do i load virtual instruments and effects and whatnot?

I may just stick with reaper even though the osx version crashes  a lot compared to the windows one.

TBH mate, I suspect that your copy of reaper is illegal and that it is installed on an illegal copy of OSX which in turn is illegally installed on a non-mac PC.
I wouldn't expect it to work too smoothly if i were you.
I don't use reaper personally but one of my housemates lives on it, and I've never heard of it crashing. (ProTools, however is a completely different story  )

Virtual instruments and effects can be accessed via the tabs under the word "Inserts" in the mini-mixer on the left hand of your screen. You should set them up in the order you wish them to be.
For a more comprehensive mixer with every track and bus on it just click the "Mixer" tab at the bottom.
Logic comes with a shortish "getting started" manual (as well as a few more ridiculously sized ones), which is very useful if you can get your hands on a copy.

As far as getting your line6 to work goes; it really depends what line6 product it is :P Have you set it up as your soundcard and configured the ins/outs on the appropriate channels?

Reaper is freeware.....

I only had it crash twice but i realised it was due toa  cr@ppy plugin that my bass player installed.

Im gonna keep messing around with logic however as it does look a lot more flexible.

And my illegal mac on my non mac pc is just a test ground to see if i like it enough to warrant buying a macbook after xmas... so far i dont ever want to see windows again.,.

I just cant get into pro tools, I know its not a shite program but it just feels clunky and awkward when you've got used to Reaper, well it does for me anyway.
